Two teams at different poles are facing each other on Thursday night, in Tel Aviv, for the stage nine of the Euroleague. Fenerbahce, the winners of the competition from two years ago and last year’s finalists are going to Tel Aviv to meet Maccabi, a team that missed the playoffs in the last two years.
Maccabi won only once this season in Euroleague, against Buducnost. Another disastrous year for the Israeli champ, which they hope to bounce back with the help of their new coach, Ioannis Sfairopoulos. However, having the second weakest offense in the Euroleague (75.8 points per game), at tie with Darussafaka, it’s going to be hard for Maccabi to face the well-organized defense of Fener. At a first glance, a new coach, whose philosophy is not fully implemented, and a fragile morale are making Maccabi’s job very difficult.
On the other hand, Fenerbahce are having a very good season in this year’s Euroleague, with seven victories in eight matches. The team looks as strong as they managed to win some disputes at the edge, against Bayern, Baskonia or Olympiacos. Last week they scored 100 points against Darussafaka. Every time they were in difficulty, the boys led by the legendary Zeljko Obradovic managed to pull themselves together and win, showing, beside value, a strength of character that will probably lead them towards another Final Four in 2019.

Head – to – Head
12 to 5 in the favor of Maccabi is the match record between the two since 2000. However, the latest victories for the Israeli team date from 2017. All the three matches played in 2018 were won by Fenerbahce. Interesting is that Fener won only once on Maccabi’s court.
Maccabi desperately needs a victory to get out from a very bad period for them. There is still chance to revive this season, but they need to push the acceleration and show they are capable to beat one of the three best teams in Euroleague right now. Fenerbahce comes with the calm of the third place and the four consecutive victories, but don’t count out Maccabi. This will be a close one.
