Kovač says Dortmund can't challenge Bayern next year

I see both sides here. The statement is honest, but it also risks making the season feel pre-decided.
 
if you actually watch the way Dortmund have been put together it is hard to argue they are ready to go toe to toe with Bayern for a whole season because the squad still looks like a mix of short term fixes and players who need everything to go right and that is before you even get into the mental side of it where one bad run and the whole thing starts wobbling and that is why the quote is annoying but not completely mad because the footballing reasons are there even if the messaging is terrible
 
I can understand why people are angry about the wording because it sounds defeatist, and in football that always lands badly, but at the same time I do think there is a difference between saying the truth and selling dreams that are not backed by the squad you actually have. Dortmund have been through so many cycles of hype, disappointment and rebuilds that maybe he is just trying to be careful, but the problem is that careful can quickly sound like cowardly when you are speaking publicly and every fan is desperate for someone to show a bit of spine and belief and honestly if this turns into another season where they are good enough to tease people but not good enough to finish the job then this quote is going to get dragged out forever because it will feel like the moment everyone knew exactly how it was going to go and that is the part that makes it sting more than anything else
 
nah i dont buy the whole hes just being honest argument because managers are not just random blokes on a podcast they are supposed to shape the mood around the club and if he starts by telling everyone the ceiling is low then dont be shocked when the players and fans act like it is low the whole thing becomes self fulfilling and that is the problem with this kind of comment
