Southampton lose appeal, chaos continues

Southampton have lost their appeal and the whole thing has gone from bad to absolute mess. They admitted to it, so it was always hard to see how they were getting this overturned, but it still feels like the start of a much bigger fallout for the club.

What makes it even messier is the talk of more legal action, possible player claims, and other clubs wondering if they have a case too. It feels like this could drag on for ages and leave a proper mark on Southampton, not just this season but well beyond it.

On the football side, there is also the feeling that this has to be a warning to everyone else. If a club gets caught cheating and then tries to wriggle out of it, the punishment has to mean something. Still, you can already imagine the fans thinking this is going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better.

club have absolutely done themselves no favours here at all, once you admit it the appeal looks dead before it even starts and now theyre staring at a whole pile of problems that could drag on for ages, proper self inflicted mess

can only imagine how sick the fans must feel right now because this has gone from a football issue to a full on club crisis and every day there seems to be another bit of bad news coming out and it just keeps getting worse

The bigger issue is that the appeal was never going to fix the underlying problem. If the club admitted the conduct, the focus shifts to what punishment follows and whether any wider claims come from it. That is where the real damage happens.

Feels like the club have made the situation worse by trying to fight it after admitting the charges, because all that does is keep the story alive and give everyone more time to think about what else might come out, and if there were only three games then that still seems wild

The thing that gets me with this is the way some clubs and fans act like the officials are the only problem in football when you have a situation like this staring everyone in the face and the club are basically trying to argue around something they already admitted doing, then they act shocked when the appeal goes nowhere and people start talking about consequences, it is not complicated, if you cheat in a competition and get caught then you do not get to cry about fairness when the punishment arrives, the whole point of rules is that they have to mean something or else you may as well bin the lot, and now the club are potentially dealing with more claims and more mess because they thought they could just wave it away and move on
