Maresca to City? Bald Fraud lives on

Tactically, this only works if City trust him to keep the same control in possession while adapting to the league changing around them. Pep has already had to shift his approach over the last couple of seasons, so the next manager cannot just copy and paste the old ideas and expect the same results.
 
The interesting part is not just that Maresca might go to City, it is what it says about how they view succession and identity, because this is not a club looking for a wild reset, this is a club looking for something that preserves the same basic principles while swapping the face in charge. That can work if the squad and the structure are strong enough, and City obviously think they are, but it also means the next manager is going to be trapped in Pep comparisons from day one and that is brutal. Still, I get why rival fans are already celebrating because the idea of Pep leaving after ten years and being replaced by someone who just came from Chelsea has that weird end-of-an-era feeling, like the whole thing is about to look different and nobody knows if different means weaker or just less terrifying, and if it does go wrong the internet will never let them forget it and if it goes right then everyone else is going to be absolutely sick of hearing about it
