Could Bournemouth or Brighton nick a Champions League spot?

It mainly comes down to how the extra place is allocated through the coefficient rules. If the Premier League keeps the spot, then sixth can inherit it depending on the final table and specific results. It is messy, but the logic is consistent once you accept UEFA loves complicated structures.
 
I dont agree with people saying its embarrassing for a sixth placed team to go in because the whole point is that the league earned the extra berth through coefficient results so if the rules say sixth gets it then sixth gets it, simple as that and Sporting being bumped out is just the system doing what it was set up to do
 
The coefficient angle is doing a lot of work here. If the Premier League keeps the extra place, then the identity of the sixth team matters more than the exact table position in the traditional sense. It is still a strange outcome, but it is not random.
 
People keep acting like Bournemouth or Brighton getting the place would be some crime but if they finish in the position that the rules point to then what exactly is the issue, they are not being handed anything for free they are benefiting from a system that rewards the league and the results around them, Sporting fans will obviously be annoyed and fair enough because they expected the direct slot, but the anger should be aimed at UEFA for making the structure this confusing in the first place not at the clubs who might profit from it, and honestly if the PL has earned the extra berth then the PL has earned it
 
It is basically a domino effect and that is why the last day becomes so strange, City and Liverpool have to do the expected stuff first and then the sixth place race becomes the real story, which is mad when you think about it because one result in Brentford or Villa changes the entire European picture
 
On paper this is just a coefficient allocation issue, but the broader problem is that nobody watches the final day thinking about administrative slots and yet here we are. You can already see fans from every angle arguing about fairness, and then somehow it turns into a debate about whether the Premier League needs six Champions League places, which is just a completely different conversation and probably the sort of thing that ends with UEFA making it even worse next year
 
Brentford are getting talked about like they are some guaranteed sacrifice here and I do not know why because they are perfectly capable of ruining the whole thing, and if they do then all this hand wringing about Bournemouth or Brighton becomes pointless anyway, but people keep acting like the English teams are entitled to everything and then when the numbers dont line up they want to cry about fairness, it is all a bit much and the whole idea of sixth place in one league deciding another club's fate is already daft enough without everyone pretending there is a clean moral answer
 
If the extra spot stays with England, then sixth place is the cleanest outcome. Sporting only get it if the chain of results breaks.
 
It is a strange setup, but the rule itself seems pretty clear once you accept the coefficient logic. The annoying part is that fans then have to root for unrelated results just to see who gets rewarded, which feels a bit backwards imo
