Emery and the Europa League villa stat

Man just keeps humiliating everyone in this thing and the villa joke makes it even worse for the rest of us because now the whole record sounds like some sort of cursed football prophecy and honestly if my team ever had to face him again I would already be preparing for the pain
 
The funny part is that the stat works on two levels: it is a genuine managerial achievement and also a perfect bit of football trivia. Those are usually separate things, but Emery somehow gets both.
 
It is easy to laugh at the villa angle, but the real story is that he keeps finding a way to win in a competition that punishes mistakes. The joke and the achievement both deserve attention.
 
There is definitely a serious football point buried under the joke here, because winning this competition five times with three different teams is not something you stumble into by accident, it means you are consistently getting your squads ready for the exact demands of the tournament and that is a huge credit to him. But the villa thing has completely taken over my brain now and I cannot unsee it, every time I read the stat it sounds more and more like some fake internet post that got out of hand, and yet it is real, and that makes it even better, because football is at its best when it produces these absurd little patterns that feel too neat to be true and then absolutely are true and everyone is left sitting there going what the hell just happened
