Romero in Argentina on relegation Sunday

The captain going missing for a huge match is proper taking the piss, you can almost hear the excuses already and none of them are going to sound good because it looks exactly like he has checked out and left everyone else to deal with the fallout
 
Tactically it also sends a horrible message because if your captain is not fully present then the whole defensive unit loses a bit of authority and edge, and that matters more in a tense game than people think, especially when the team already looks fragile and the atmosphere around it is toxic
 
I do not think this is only about him being selfish, because clubs also let these situations build up by not making clear decisions early enough. If they wanted him fully committed then they should have made that non negotiable, so some of this blame has to sit with the people running Spurs as well
 
It is easy to pile everything onto Romero, and he has absolutely made himself look terrible here. But Spurs also have to answer for how a situation like this was allowed to develop in the first place. Both the player and the club come out of it looking weak.
 
Romero has always been the sort of player who lives on reputation and chaos more than actual consistency, and this just feels like the latest example of that because when things are important he seems to find a way to make it about him or disappear from the moment, and Spurs fans have spent ages trying to convince themselves he is some elite leader when all the evidence keeps pointing the other way, the positioning, the timing, the attitude, all of it, and now the club captain is in Argentina while the team faces a massive match and honestly what more proof do people need that this guy is not built for responsibility and probably never was
 
From a squad-management point of view, this is the sort of thing that undermines any authority the manager and club think they have. If the captain can simply be elsewhere for a decisive fixture, then the hierarchy is already compromised before a ball is kicked.
 
I get why people are calling him a disgrace, but I also think this is the sort of story that tells you the relationship is probably already finished. If he is going anyway then the club should have protected itself better and not let it get to this point imo
 
It is a bad look for both sides, but especially for a captain. Spurs will need to move on from this quickly.
