Maguire left out of England squad

I think the key question is whether the manager wants defenders who can step into midfield and help England control games, because if thats the plan then Maguire is probably not the first name you pick. But if the priority is defending your box and being a threat from dead balls then he makes a lot more sense and that is why the omission feels so strange
 
Tactically, this looks like a choice between security and flexibility. Maguire offers set-piece danger, leadership and a familiar international presence, while the other options may offer more pace or different build-up qualities. The decision will be judged on whether England can compensate for what he brings in those key moments.
 
Honestly this is the kind of decision that makes fans lose faith before a tournament even starts because you look at the names available and then you look at the ones who actually know how to perform for England and it feels like common sense has been thrown in the bin for no reason at all and I know people love the Maguire memes and the slabhead jokes and all that but at some point you have to stop pretending that the joke is the whole story because he has been there in the big moments and he has dealt with the pressure and he gives you something real in both boxes and if the manager thinks he can just replace that with vibes and a fancy explanation then good luck because the first time England concede from a corner everyone will be screaming about this exact call and rightly so
