Wolfsburg relegated after playoff loss to Paderborn

Imagine being so well funded and still getting sent packing by Paderborn of all teams, thats the sort of humiliation you cant even spin with a fancy statement anymore, just pure embarrassing

I get why people are laughing, because Wolfsburg have made themselves easy to dislike. At the same time, Paderborn still had to do the job in a high-pressure game, and that deserves respect.

Nah i dont buy the idea that this is some noble football justice thing because Wolfsburg being badly run doesnt make every bit of schadenfreude automatically correct, they still had to lose the playoff and that takes something from Paderborn too

The fair point here is that clubs built on heavy spending without a clear footballing plan tend to end up in trouble eventually, and Wolfsburg have been flirting with that reality for a while. But once you get past the structural stuff, this is also just a ridiculous football moment, because the amount of joy people are getting from it shows how much resentment there is toward clubs like this. And honestly that resentment is not coming from nowhere, because every time Wolfsburg try to sell themselves as stable or ambitious they seem to produce another mess, another awkward season, another reminder that money can paper over a lot but not everything, and now everyone is just piling in and laughing while the club has to deal with the fallout, which is fair enough really

i cant lie this has made my evening because every time i saw wolfsburg mentioned it was always with all that corporate nonsense and now theyve actually got the embarrassing ending everyone was waiting for

I know everyone wants to pile on Wolfsburg because theyre an easy target and yeah sure theyve been a weird club for ages but lets not pretend Paderborn didnt have to absolutely earn that result and hold their nerve when it mattered, because playoff games are brutal and one mistake can change everything, so while the money talk and the mismanagement chat is all true enough there is still something proper about a smaller side getting the big moment and taking it, and I think some of the celebration in here is a bit much if im honest because the losing side are still players and fans who have had a nightmare night and that should count for something

Was in the pub when the result came through and the whole place just erupted because there was this one bloke in a Wolfsburg top who had spent the last half hour acting like it was already done and dusted and then the room just turned on him in about two seconds flat, proper laughter, pints nearly going everywhere, one of those nights where football is somehow the only thing anyone wants to talk about and even people who do not care about Germany at all suddenly have an opinion on Paderborn and Wolfsburg and the whole playoff system and it was just absolute chaos

paderborn fans are probably still trying to work out how to celebrate this and wolfsburg fans are sat there staring into the void while everyone else is having a laugh, football really is a cruel little sport sometimes

On paper this is exactly the sort of result that exposes a club with no real footballing direction, because if you keep spending and still end up in a playoff against a side like Paderborn then something has gone badly wrong long before kickoff. But once the game actually starts, all the theory goes out the window and it becomes about nerve, and Wolfsburg just did not have it. The more I think about it the more hilarious it becomes, because they have spent so long acting like this sort of thing is beneath them and now they are the punchline, and honestly that is on them and nobody else and I am loving every second of it
