Guessand’s weird bit of history

Evann Guessand has apparently done something no one else has managed, winning two European trophies in the same season. That is properly ridiculous on paper, even if it takes a bit of brain-bending to work out how it all fits together.

The Arsenal jokes were obviously never far away, and fair play, because this is exactly the sort of mad stat that invites them. Still, it is one of those football trivia bits that will get dragged out for years in pubs and quizzes.

I can already see people arguing about cup-tied rules and whether it should even count, but either way it is a very strange little slice of football history

That is one of those stats that sounds fake until you actually sit there and think about the mess of modern football and all these competitions overlapping and clubs buying half the continent and sending lads out on loans and then suddenly someone ends up with two medals from two different European trophies in one season and everyone is sat there going wait what. Honestly it is ridiculous in the best way, proper pub quiz material, and the best bit is how it instantly turns into Arsenal banter because of course it does, they could be handed a miracle and still somehow make it look stressful. Football is just completely unhinged sometimes and I love it for that, even if it makes no sense at all

I was in the pub last night with a couple of lads and one of them was trying to explain cup tied rules like he was doing a lecture at uni and the table next to us kept interrupting with nonsense about old European formats and honestly nobody had a clue but everyone was acting like they were the authority on it, proper football pub behaviour, half the room shouting different answers and one old boy just saying it does not matter mate if it is on the internet it must be true, and that is basically how these threads always go, a bit of history gets posted and within five minutes it is all Arsenal jokes, people arguing about who really won what, and someone saying it should not count because reasons, classic stuff

It is a very unusual stat, but the wording matters a lot here. People are already arguing about whether it should count, which is basically the most football thing possible.

The referee and the officials always get dragged into these things as well because once the internet starts asking how is that possible everyone suddenly wants a clean legal definition for every medal and every registration and every competition window and somehow it always becomes a shambles, and I swear the people in charge never explain it properly, they just let everybody stew in confusion while the pundits talk absolute bollocks on TV, if it is a cup tied issue then say so, if it is not then say so, but do not leave it to random lads in comment sections to work out the whole history of European football like they are on some investigation panel because that is exactly how the nonsense starts and then the ref gets blamed for something that happened months ago anyway

This feels like one of those stats that is only funny because it is so oddly specific. Arsenal getting mentioned in the same breath just makes it even better, but I do wonder how many people are actually clear on the rules behind it imo

It is a funny bit of history, even if the details are a little confusing. Football always finds a way to produce something ridiculous.

A measured point here is that the stat is getting attention because it sounds impossible at first glance, and that is exactly why people are joking about Arsenal and cup-tied rules. But once you start thinking about it, football history is full of these odd overlaps where the headline is bigger than the actual explanation, and that is why fans end up arguing over the wording rather than the achievement itself. Also, the whole thing makes me think about how many players get remembered for one bizarre trivia line years later while the actual football fades away, which is a bit sad really, because the internet will turn anybody into a meme if the stat is strange enough and then everyone pretends they have been following it for years, proper nonsense if you ask me
