Iran v New Zealand absolute madness

I was in the pub earlier and there was this one bloke who had not even planned to watch football properly he just came in for a couple of pints and then suddenly he is standing right by the screen shouting at every attack like he has followed Iran all his life and by the end of it he was saying this is why you never leave a tournament game early because you can go from thinking its a nothing fixture to telling everyone for weeks that you saw a mad one live and honestly thats exactly what this kind of match does to people
 
The interesting part is how quickly the match has opened up after the equaliser. Once both sides committed to attacking transitions, it stopped being about control and became about who could handle the next wave of pressure better. That usually makes for great viewing.
 
On a tactical level this is really about the space behind the full backs and the willingness to hit the early switch when the press is beaten, which is why the move for the goal looked so clean and why New Zealand kept getting dragged around. But honestly the longer it goes on the more it turns into one of those nights where the details stop mattering and you just end up shouting at the screen because every attack feels like it could become something ridiculous and that is exactly what tournament football does to you when you have stayed up too late and convinced yourself youll just watch one more highlight and then suddenly its half past whatever and youre fully invested
 
this is the sort of match that reminds you why people get addicted to tournament football because one minute you think you are just seeing a decent group game and the next minute every single attack feels like it could rip the whole thing open and the energy just keeps climbing and climbing and then someone hits a ball like that and suddenly everyone is losing their minds and honestly i do not even care that the defending is all over the place because both sides are actually trying to win it and that is a thousand times better than watching two teams hide for ninety minutes and pretend a point is enough
 
im actually buzzing watching this ngl because i had no expectations at all and now im fully locked in like this is exactly the sort of game that makes you forget what time it is and why your alarm is gonna hate you later
 
all the people calling it the best game ever are acting like theyve never seen an open match before but i guess if you want to pretend random chaos is the same as elite football then crack on mate
 
At a basic level this is just a brilliant example of how a tournament match can explode when one good switch and one good cross meet a defence that is already stretched. Iran have handled the moment better and New Zealand have kept it alive, which is why it has been so watchable. But also if you are not enjoying this then you are probably watching football for the wrong reasons because this is exactly the sort of nonsense that makes you fall in love with it all over again and i swear if one more person says boring because theres no cagey 0 0 im going to lose it
 
The shape is the big thing here, because once one side gets dragged across and the switch comes in, the far side is always exposed. That is why the cross looked so dangerous and why the header had such a clean look at goal, it was a structural problem as much as a technical one
