Can we also talk about how the officials always seem to get dragged into these Ronaldo debates because one little decision and suddenly the whole thing becomes a referendum on his career and his personality and the referee is either a hero or a villain depending on who you support, it is absolute nonsense, every thread turns into a courtroom, and the officials always end up catching strays while everyone ignores the actual football and I am sick of it because whether you rate Ronaldo or not this constant noise around him and the way the game gets swallowed by it is ridiculous and the refs get no peace whatsoever

People love to pile on the side that loses and act like that means they were never any good and that is exactly what is happening here with Ronaldo and it is so unfair because Portugal did not exactly build a perfect team around him for years and yet he still carried the pressure, the expectation and the whole circus on his back while everyone else got to hide when it went wrong and now because he is older people want to pretend the whole story is a failure which is nonsense, he gave them so much, he gave football so much, and if you are honest about it you know that losing one trophy does not magically turn decades of greatness into nothing, it is just the internet being the internet and taking the piss as usual
