FIFA sensor data and the cable controversy

A reasonable reading is that the video quality is too poor to prove a touch either way, which is why the sensor data matters so much. But the minute you say that out loud everyone starts acting like you are defending FIFA itself and that is where football chat goes off the rails, because people are not actually arguing about the ball anymore they are arguing about whether their side gets to feel hard done by, and that turns every thread into a culture war

people calling this a clear deflection are just talking absolute shite and it is hilarious because the same lot would be screaming fraud if the result went the other way, every big moment becomes a conspiracy the second it suits them

I was in the pub when this came up on the telly and half the lads at the bar were convinced it had clipped something while the other half were laughing saying it was just a weird angle and honestly it turned into a proper argument over nothing because nobody could actually agree what they were seeing and the more people drank the more certain they got, one bloke even started waving his pint glass around like he was analysing the trajectory and that is when you know the football chat has gone completely off the rails, by the end everyone was shouting about FIFA and cameras and bias and nobody could remember why they were so angry in the first place

The cleanest takeaway is that the footage by itself is not enough to prove a touch, so the sensor data is doing the heavy lifting here. But honestly the way this has been handled is maddening because the moment people do not trust the institution, every explanation sounds like damage control and every replay becomes a battle over narratives, and that is why these controversies never die, because nobody believes anyone is telling the full story and then everyone just starts screaming corruption at the top of their lungs

I can understand why people are sceptical, because the video alone does not look decisive. At the same time, if the sensor data is official then that has to count for something, even if the wider trust issue with FIFA means half the internet will never accept it.
