Two of the most watchable clubs in La Liga meet at the Anoeta on Tuesday when Real Sociedad host Celta de Vigo in a clash of two sides that have underachieved this season. Sociedad are 12th in the standings with 43 points from 35 games while Celta are seventh with 49, but neither club is likely to challenge for European places in the 2024-2025 campaign. Sociedad boss Imanol Alguacil is a long-serving manager who has brought a sense of structure to the club’s style of play and they are always a possession-based side that tries to smother opponents with compact defending. Celta, on the other hand, have gone all in on a high-octane attacking style under boss Claudio Giraldez, who took over in March 2024. The two approaches are polar opposites and should ensure that this game is open and full of goals from the first whistle to the last.
The recent head-to-head record is fairly even with Sociedad having won two of the last five La Liga meetings, Celta one and two draws. But the visitors won the last meeting 2-0 at home four months ago and have enough quality to win again this week. Sociedad have failed to win their last two home games against Celta, which makes the visitors a tempting bet at 3.25 on the road this week while the hosts are 2.46 to win. Celta have lost both of their last two away games, so there is a good chance their road woes will continue in this campaign. But the fact that Sociedad have won only seven of their 17 home La Liga games this season – drawing three and losing seven – means we are leaning towards a draw in the correct score market.
Sociedad have conceded an average of 1.00 goals per game at home this season and, although they are a very well-drilled side, Celta’s attacking flair should ensure both teams score on Tuesday. Both teams to score is a tempting proposition for this clash. Mikel Oyarzabal is the main man for Sociedad with eight La Liga goals in 32 games and he has scored both of his side’s goals in their last two. Takefusa Kubo is a creative spark that can unlock defences with his skill and late surges, which could be the difference in a tight game. Iago Aspas is still the talisman for Celta, linking up play and providing big goals when they are needed. And Celta have also hit form with Borja Iglesias bagging 10 La Liga goals in 2024-25. Celta’s last three La Liga games have seen them beat Villarreal 3-0 and Sevilla 3-2 at home, but lose 3-2 at Real Madrid. Meanwhile, Sociedad have drawn 0-0 at home to Athletic Bilbao and lost 4-0 at Atletico Madrid, so we are expecting a much more open game on Tuesday.
