2026 World Cup breaks attendance record already

The attendance record is meaningful, but it should be read in context. This tournament has more games than the old 24-team World Cup, and the venue sizes are significantly larger than in many previous editions, so the raw total was always likely to climb quickly. Even so, it is a good indicator that the event has not suffered from the kind of widespread disengagement some people predicted.

People are acting like this proves every criticism was wrong when that is not really the point at all, because yes the stadiums are bigger and yes there are more matches and yes the total attendance was always going to be helped by that, but that does not magically erase the fact that a lot of the talk about empty seats was overblown and unfair to the fans who were actually planning to go, and honestly the whole thing has turned into another excuse for people to sneer at the host and say the worst possible thing before a ball has even been kicked properly, which is pathetic, because the people who turned up are not some statistic to be dismissed just because it suits an online argument, they are the reason the record exists and the snobs can get in the bin

This is why I never buy the doom narrative before a tournament even starts. People love declaring failure from behind a keyboard, then the actual event happens and the crowds are there, the numbers are there, and suddenly everyone is backtracking like mad. It is not perfect, it is not some miracle, but it is still a huge turnout and the smugness from the empty stadium crowd looks ridiculous now, honestly they should just hold their hands up instead of trying to spin it again and again because it is getting embarrassing

I dont think the record means the criticism was wrong across the board because ticket prices are still a real issue and the tournament can be popular while also being expensive and awkward for plenty of fans, so acting like attendance alone settles everything is a bit lazy and the whole discussion needs more nuance than just saying haters in shambles

There is a bit of truth on both sides here. The record was always going to be helped by the number of games and the size of the venues, but it still matters that people have shown up in huge numbers. The pre-tournament predictions of total failure were clearly overdone, even if the ticket pricing debate remains valid.

The real villain here is every single person who spent weeks acting like this would be a disaster and then moved on to another excuse the second the attendance numbers came in, because that is exactly what happens every time with these threads and it is the same smug nonsense from the same types of users who never actually watch the matches, they just want a pile on, and then when the crowds are there they act like the numbers do not count or that the big stadiums somehow make the fans imaginary, which is beyond stupid, the people turning up are real, the atmosphere is real, the hype is real, and the critics can sit there coping all tournament if they want
