Algeria 3-3 Austria - absolute chaos at the death

I dont think it was just luck though there was pressure from both sides and the late equaliser came from the game state more than magic so people calling it random are missing the point

It was chaotic, but there was still a logic to it. When a match stays open that late, one moment can completely flip the mood and the result. That is why people love these tournaments.

I know everyone wants to turn this into a joke about Iran or some cosmic punishment or whatever but spare a thought for Algeria because they were right there and then it all slips away in the last second and that is brutal no matter who you support football can be cruel and people act like only the winners get to feel anything but the losing side just got absolutely wrecked by the timing of it and that is why I hate when people only celebrate the chaos and ignore the team that has just had the wind taken out of them because they are the ones walking off shattered while everyone online screams about cinema

That was ridiculous, but the stoppage time was always going to be extended. People complaining about the whistle are missing how these endings work.

The real story is how the match stayed open long enough for that to happen. Once one side equalised late, the other side had to push immediately, and that created the space for the final twist. It was a classic chain reaction.

The amount of people losing their heads like they have never seen stoppage time before is hilarious honestly the whistle does not just magically appear because the clock hits a number and then the late goal means you play on a bit longer and somehow that has become controversial which is just peak internet football

On balance, this is exactly the sort of game that makes tournaments feel alive because it had a proper narrative swing, a late equaliser, and then the entire discussion exploded. But also, can we stop pretending every mad ending is proof of some footballing genius from the heavens because half the time it is just tired defenders, a bit of panic, and a ref trying to keep up with the chaos and then everyone online starts acting like they have discovered the meaning of life and it is a bit much really, still though, what a ridiculous finish

The referee is going to get dragged for this and honestly I can see why because once the late goal goes in everyone suddenly starts counting the seconds like the game should be over on the dot and then when it is not they lose the plot, but that is not how football has ever worked and it winds me up that the officials always end up being the target when players and teams create the mess themselves by not seeing it out properly and then the crowd feeds the whole thing and the commentators start shouting and by the end nobody even remembers what the actual law was because they are too busy screaming about conspiracy and robbery and all the usual bollocks
