Atlético agree deal for Julián, player says no

What a ridiculous transfer story this is. Atlético apparently agree terms with Arsenal, but the player is said to have turned it down because he only wants Barcelona. That is peak modern football gossip, honestly.

It also raises the usual question: why would a club push this far without knowing the player is actually interested? Maybe there is more to it, maybe the report is nonsense, but either way it has the internet having a proper laugh.

If it is true, you can understand Arsenal fans not wanting to get dragged into a saga like that. If a player is already set on one destination, it feels like a waste of time for everyone else involved.

If a player has already made up his mind, then any bid from elsewhere is basically just noise. Clubs might still test the waters, but it feels unlikely Arsenal would move without some sort of encouragement from the agent first. Otherwise it is just a public dead end.

If the report is real, then fair enough to the player for being honest about his preference. At the same time, it is hard to blame Arsenal or Atlético for moving carefully if they think there is a chance. The whole thing just sounds messy rather than dramatic.

From a tactical point of view this is why clubs need clarity before the fee gets out there if a player is dead set on one move then everything else is a waste and you end up looking daft in public instead of doing business quietly

Arsenal fans getting the full romcom experience here, one club says yes, the player says no, and Barcelona are sat there like the popular kid in school again while everyone else does the chasing and pays for dinner

This is exactly why transfer talk is unbearable now because every window you get these stories where a club apparently agrees a deal and then the player says no and everyone acts shocked like it is some kind of twist when in reality half the time the whole thing is just being used to drive clicks and make one club look desperate and another look glamorous, and if he really only wants Barcelona then that is his choice but it also means every other club should stop wasting time and money pretending they can tempt him, because you know how this goes, it turns into weeks of nonsense, fanbase arguments, people saying he is rude or ungrateful or whatever, and then in the end he either gets his dream move or nothing happens at all and everyone is left looking stupid, honestly the whole transfer market is just one giant theatre production now and I am tired of it

Had a bloke in the pub last night telling us all about how clubs always know what they are doing and they never bid blind and I just sat there thinking mate if this story is even half true then what are we even doing because it is the same every year, some player has his heart set on one club, another club gets linked to him anyway, the papers run with it, the fans argue for two days, and then nothing comes of it, it reminds me of when everyone in our lot spent a full Sunday insisting a deal was basically done and then by Monday it was gone and the mood in the pub was like a funeral, I swear football transfer talk is more stressful than the actual matches sometimes and half the lads around here treat it like gospel when it is probably just some bloke typing for the sake of it

if he only wants barca then fair enough really, but clubs need to stop acting shocked when players have a preference and the whole thing gets dragged out for weeks, its all very predictable at this point
