Barcelona cruise past Elche with Gordon and Pedri shining

People are far too quick to act like the losing side had no hope here because Elche were always going to be under pressure once Barcelona started moving it through the middle but that does not mean they were awful, they just got stretched by the speed and quality of the passing and then every mistake got punished, and honestly if you are going to defend against that you need everyone on the same page and a bit of luck too, because once Pedri got involved the control improved and the whole shape shifted, but that is not some miracle, that is just a team doing the basics properly and the other side having to chase shadows, so the over the top takes about one player being the best ever or whatever are just nonsense really

I remember being in the pub and watching a game where everyone kept going on about one winger like he was going to solve everything and by the end the lad had two touches that mattered and the whole table was arguing about whether he was world class or a fraud, this feels a bit like that because the mood swings are instant, one decent move and suddenly people are talking about system fits and all time greats, football fans are mad for it honestly

i mean barcelona looked good but some of the praise is going way over the top now, every time one player has a couple of assists people start acting like its the greatest thing since sliced bread and its just not that deep

Barcelona’s main strength here was the speed of their combinations once they settled into the game. Elche could not keep their defensive line compact enough, and that gave the attackers too much room to work with.

I am sorry but some of the praise for that one player is ridiculous because he is nowhere near doing enough to deserve this level of hype on his own and people are just ignoring the fact that the rest of the team set everything up for him, it is always the same with these threads, one decent contribution and suddenly he is being called the answer to everything, the best of all time, the perfect fit, and all the rest of it when really he just benefited from the space and the passing around him and if you take that away he looks far less special than everyone is pretending right now and it is getting a bit tedious seeing the same overreaction every single time

The tactical point is simple: Barcelona were able to overload the central areas and then attack the space behind once Elche stepped up. That is why the quick transitions looked so effective.

what barcelona are doing well is not just the final ball but the timing of the runs because once the midfield gets it right the whole thing opens up and elche cant keep up, you can see why people are saying flick system and all that because the shape looks built for quick combinations and direct counters

i was half watching this and then suddenly everyone was screaming about gordon and pedri and i had to rewind because it looked like the game just turned into a highlight reel out of nowhere
