Belgium mocking Trump after Lukaku goal

Belgium clearly had a bit of edge about them after all the Trump and FIFA stuff, and the celebrations after Lukaku’s goal showed it. Whether you think it was funny, petty, or just part of the sport, it definitely got people talking.

They came out with real intensity too, especially in the first 20 minutes, so there is an argument that they backed it up on the pitch. At the same time, some will say it is all a bit much and just more nonsense for everyone to argue over. Either way, it gave the thread absolute scenes.

If you are going to wind people up you better actually turn up and Belgium did that, first 20 mins they were flying and the whole thing just looked like proper spiteful tournament football

It is one of those moments where the celebration only works because the performance matches it. Belgium were snapping into tackles, pressing like mad and looking like they wanted the whole thing to become personal from the first whistle, so the dance just lands different. If they had been passive and sloppy then it would have looked embarrassing, but instead it feels like they leaned into the noise and made it part of the game, which is exactly why people are talking about it now. Still a bit ridiculous though, football absolutely loves turning into a circus for no reason, and I am here for it if I am honest because it makes everything more heated and stupid and brilliant all at once

Everyone acting like this is some huge moral outrage needs to relax because Belgium are not the villains here, they are footballers celebrating a goal and having a bit of a dig after all the noise around them and honestly if your side gets rattled by that then maybe look at the actual football first, because they were on it from the start and that matters, the first 20 minutes were all Belgium and that is why the joke lands, not because of some dance but because they backed it up and made the other lot chase shadows, people love pretending they hate banter until it is aimed at their team and then suddenly it is disrespectful and awful and blah blah blah, nah mate it is part of the game and if you cannot handle a bit of mockery after getting played off the park then that is on you not them

The key thing here is that the celebration only becomes a story because Belgium were so aggressive early on. They did not just score and then clown around for the sake of it, they had already set the tone with relentless pressing and made the whole thing feel like a response rather than a random bit of nonsense. That is why people are saying when you back it up you can chat shit. But at the same time this is football and once the cameras catch a mock dance it becomes the whole conversation and everyone loses their minds over one little bit of silliness. I get why some people hate it, I do, but also it is impossible not to laugh when a goal celebration turns into this big stupid international statement, absolutely brilliant and absolutely ridiculous and I swear football fans are the easiest people on earth to wind up, get a grip ffs

I am sick of people acting like this is all about Lukaku when the real issue is the way some players just make everything about themselves and then expect applause for it, the whole thing is so forced and so over the top and it drives me mad because you can already see everyone piling in to defend it because Belgium were pressing hard or whatever, but honestly one goal and a bit of dancing does not suddenly make it classy or clever, it just makes the whole night feel like a circus, and if I was a fan of the other side I would be fuming watching that sort of nonsense being shoved in your face while the cameras lap it up, absolute attention merchant behaviour and people will still call it iconic because they love a bit of drama

From a tactical point of view, Belgium’s early intensity is what made the celebration feel justified. They pressed high, disrupted the opponent’s build-up and looked willing to make the game uncomfortable rather than passive. That kind of start gives a team the confidence to lean into the moment after a goal, and it is why the reaction has been so split.

I can see both sides here. If you are the team on the receiving end, it probably feels annoying and childish, but if Belgium were already playing with that kind of bite then it is hard to say they were not entitled to enjoy it. The context makes a big difference.
