Busquets starts coaching at Barça Atlètic

I remember being in the pub years ago and there was this old bloke in the corner who would not stop going on about how the best players always end up on the touchline eventually and everyone was laughing at him because he was three pints in and making no sense but then you get news like this and you think maybe he was onto something after all because some players just carry that sort of football brain around with them and Busquets always felt like one of those lads who could stand on the side and see the game in a way most of us never will, the whole thing makes me think of all the random chats you have with mates where somebody says a legend will come back one day and you just nod and move on and then years later it actually happens and suddenly the pub wisdom sounds less daft than it did at the time

From a tactical angle it is a very Barca appointment because it keeps the same ideas flowing through the club and that matters a lot more than people think, especially for young midfielders learning spacing, tempo and positioning, if he can pass on even half of what made him so good then it is a win

It is interesting because a lot of clubs talk about identity and continuity but do not actually build the pathway for it, whereas this at least looks like a concrete example of that idea. Busquets knows the environment, knows the expectations, and can probably help young players understand the details that do not show up in highlight reels. Of course, once the results start mattering all the romantic talk disappears and everyone turns into a critic again, which is the nature of football, but as a principle it is hard to argue against. Also, the thought of him eventually being around the first team in some capacity is very easy to imagine, because he always looked like a coach even when he was still playing, and now everyone will be pretending they knew it all along

At face value this is a really smart appointment because the club get a respected figure, the young players get someone who understands the role at the highest level, and Busquets gets a proper entry point into coaching without being thrown into the fire immediately, but the more you think about it the more you realise how much pressure will sit on his shoulders anyway because everyone will be waiting to decide if he is the next great Barça mind or just another legend trying to make the leap and that is where it gets mad because one bad run and the same people praising the pathway will be calling it nepotism and saying he should never have been near the job in the first place and honestly football fans are impossible and the whole thing will be judged way too quickly and I already know it will turn into a mess the second the results wobble because that is just how it goes and it does your head in

This is a sensible move for both sides. Barça keep the coaching philosophy in-house, and Busquets gets a proper environment to learn rather than being thrown straight into a huge job. It will be interesting to see whether his understanding of the game translates into coaching quickly.

The biggest positive here is the continuity. Young midfielders at Barça Atlètic should benefit from someone who understands the club’s positional ideas and the demands of playing that role at the top level. The question is whether he can turn that into coaching authority, which is a different skill entirely.

People are already talking like this is destiny and a guaranteed success but it is not that simple because being a brilliant player and being a good coach are completely different things and the club has made a habit of leaning on nostalgia when it suits them and then acting surprised when the pressure gets silly, Busquets might end up being superb, he might end up being average, he might end up hating the whole thing after six months, nobody actually knows yet so all the grand talk about him being the future of the first team is just noise and I am tired of everyone turning every former player into some magical solution before he has even got his boots off properly
