Proper scenes for Cape Verde. For a nation of that size to get through the group and do it in their first ever World Cup is just brilliant, and a 0-0 draw was enough to send them through in the end.

They had Spain and Uruguay in the group as well, which makes the whole thing feel even more mad. Two clean sheets, second in the group, and now they get to enjoy a knockout tie. Football throws up some absolute gems sometimes.

You cannot help but love a story like this. Big credit to everyone involved, because this is the sort of thing that makes tournaments worth watching.

Officials were absolutely taking the piss all night, every little stoppage turned into a circus and you could feel the game being dragged around by whistles instead of football, Cape Verde had to keep their heads while the ref seemed desperate to make it about himself and honestly when a team like this is trying to celebrate a massive achievement the last thing anyone needs is that kind of shitshow from the officials

Imagine getting all the way through that group and then acting surprised when Cape Verde celebrate like theyve won the lot, mate theyve just done something loads of bigger teams couldnt be arsed to do and half the replies are still trying to be clever about it

The sensible point here is that tournament football rewards organisation and belief more than raw reputation, and Cape Verde have clearly had both in abundance, but honestly the deeper you think about it the more ridiculous it gets because a side with that kind of population has just come through a group with Spain and Uruguay in it and people still act like these stories are random luck, they are not random at all, they are the result of proper coaching, discipline and a group of players who clearly bought into a plan, and then once you start thinking about that you end up wondering why some bigger nations still look so brittle every time the pressure goes on, which is probably a completely different argument but there you go

This is exactly why international football can still be brilliant because you get a nation like Cape Verde celebrating a knockout place after a 0-0 draw and it feels huge and real and not just another soulless big team performance where everyone is half asleep, theyve gone through a group with Spain and Uruguay and people will still try to reduce it to one result or one moment but the whole thing is the story, the size of the country, the first ever World Cup, the clean sheets, the fact theyve done enough to finish second, that is mad, that is proper football, none of this plastic nonsense about who spent the most and who has the biggest squad, absolute scenes and anyone pretending otherwise is just boring

It is a huge achievement, especially given the opposition in the group. Tournament football can level things out when a team is well drilled.

People are already talking about this like it is some fluke or some cute underdog clip for the timeline but that is so disrespectful to what Cape Verde have actually done here because they have earned every bit of this, they have stayed organised, kept two clean sheets and come out of a group with Spain and Uruguay and somehow the reaction from some corners is still to patronise them as if they were just lucky to be in the tournament, nah, that is bollocks, this is exactly why football is so good when it is not being ruined by the same usual giants every time, a smaller nation can put together a proper team and make history and everyone should be applauding it instead of acting like it means less because it is not one of the rich clubs or the usual names, absolutely brilliant from them and anyone moaning can piss off

theyve done brilliantly and people keep acting like a 0-0 means it was boring but thats not the point at all, they got the job done and that is all that matters at this stage, proper maturity from them and a massive result for the country
