Cape Verde celebrate knockout place after 0-0 with Saudi Arabia

The interesting bit for me is how they have built the whole thing on control and discipline rather than trying to outplay teams on reputation, because when you hold sides like Spain and Uruguay and then get what you need again you are basically proving the group was not a one off, the shape must have been really hard to break down and that is usually what gets you through these tournaments, not flashy nonsense but being solid and hard to shift

You can analyse this as much as you want and the basic conclusion is still that Cape Verde have just pulled off something massive, because holding Spain and Uruguay and then getting the point that sends you through is no accident, it is proof of a team that knows exactly what it is doing and does not panic when the occasion gets big. But then you see the celebration and you remember why people love this sport, because it is not about spreadsheets or rankings in the end, it is about nights like this and what they mean to a whole country and honestly if anyone tries to act cool about it they can get in the bin because this is the good stuff and it deserves the noise

That is exactly the sort of story international football needs. Cape Verde have clearly been well organised and difficult to beat, and getting through a group like that is no small thing. It is a great moment for them and for the tournament.

I dont buy the idea that it was just a heroic underdog thing and nothing else, because the whole point is they were clearly set up properly and knew exactly what they needed, people keep saying it like they stumbled into it but holding those teams and finishing second takes a lot of work and discipline

Was in the pub when the final whistle went and you would have thought somebody had scored a last minute winner the way people reacted, proper random bunch of lads too, one bloke had no idea where Cape Verde even were and he was suddenly acting like he had followed them for years, absolute scenes everywhere and then the whole place started talking about how mad it is that theyve done this in their first ever World Cup and held Spain and Uruguay as well, football does that to people though, makes everyone a bit emotional and loud and daft for five minutes and I love it

People will focus on the draw but the real story is how much of a nightmare this must have been for the opposition trying to deal with Cape Verde for the whole group because they have clearly got players who understand the job and a system that works, and that is before you even get into the pressure of needing a result in the final game, but some lads will still come out and say one player or one moment decided it, no, the whole side deserves credit because they have been proper disciplined and that is why they are through, not because someone got lucky or because the other teams just turned up and forgot how to play, that kind of take is lazy as hell and I am sick of hearing it

It is a reminder that tournament football often comes down to structure and composure rather than star power. Cape Verde have clearly handled the group brilliantly, and doing it after facing Spain and Uruguay makes the achievement feel even more impressive.
