Carragher on Chelsea’s keeper issue

Carragher’s point feels harsh on the surface, but there’s definitely something in it. If you look at the examples people keep bringing up, elite keepers seem to be the difference between a good side and an actual title winner.

Chelsea have spent a fortune and still look light in goal, which is mad really. Maybe it’s not the only problem, but it’s hard to argue that fixing the goalkeeper situation wouldn’t be their biggest single upgrade.

The Penders angle makes it even more interesting. If he’s the long-term plan then fair enough, but if Chelsea want to move up right now, you can see why people are pushing the idea of a proper established keeper instead.

Sanchez is the problem every single time and I dont care what anyone says mate he makes the whole back line look nervous from the first minute to the last, you can talk about the rest of Chelsea all day but if your keeper is flapping at crosses and turning simple moments into panic then the whole team starts playing scared and that is exactly what is happening here, hes not even giving them the basic calm you need never mind the big saves and if you want to challenge for anything serious you cant have that merchant in goal

honestly i just feel exhausted watching chelsea keep doing this to themselves because every summer it feels like they buy another shiny player and then the same obvious issue is still there in goal and you end up thinking what is the point really if the keeper cant settle the side down

At this point it is hard to argue with him because the examples are all there and Chelsea keep ignoring the most obvious part of the pitch. You can spend all the money in the world on attackers and midfielders but if the keeper is costing you confidence every week then the whole thing starts wobbling. Sanchez just does not give off that secure feeling and the annoying part is that it is not even some hidden issue, everyone can see it, the fans can see it, the pundits can see it, and yet it still hangs over them like a bad smell and it is honestly maddening because they keep acting like it will sort itself out and it never bloody does

The officials always get away with murder in these debates as well because once a keeper starts looking shaky every little decision around him gets magnified and then you have referees and assistants contributing to the chaos by being inconsistent and making everyone lose their heads, and in Chelsea games it always feels like the same pattern where one mistake turns into five because nobody is in control, the referee lets things go then suddenly pulls a card out of nowhere and the whole tempo is ruined, it is impossible to build any trust in the game when the officials are just making it up as they go along

The logic is pretty straightforward really. If a team is already creating enough chances and controlling enough games, then the goalkeeper becomes a marginal gain that can swing close title races. Arsenal and Liverpool both had keepers who gave them points, while Chelsea have a keeper who seems to create uncertainty. That difference matters. But then Chelsea just keep acting like it is some side issue and that is what drives everyone mad because it is staring them right in the face and they still wont sort it out and honestly it is ridiculous at this point

Chelsea look like they want the keeper to be optional in possession but without a reliable one the rest of the structure gets shaky, especially when the back line isnt dominant, so even if the idea is to build from the back it still needs a safe pair of hands or the whole thing becomes chaos

I get why people are piling on Chelsea but it is not as simple as just chucking one keeper in and suddenly everything clicks because the whole side still needs to be more stable and more mature and more consistent and some of the criticism feels like it ignores that they have a young squad and are trying to build something over time, Sanchez is getting absolutely hammered but he is also playing behind a team that still has a lot of moving parts and I do think people are acting like the keeper alone is the only reason they are not there yet when there are clearly bigger picture issues too and that matters even if it is not a sexy take
