Carvajal’s Bernabeu farewell and the end of an era

People keep trying to reduce him to a bloke with medals and I think thats unfair because he was one of the reasons those medals even existed, he did the hard yards, he took the hits, he gave Madrid something reliable on the right and when everyone else wanted the spotlight he just got on with it, and yeah maybe rival fans hated him for being annoying or whatever but thats what good players do to you, they get in your head, they make you miserable, and then when they leave you start pretending you always appreciated them, which is fine, but dont act like he was some passenger because he absolutely wasnt

Look at all these rival fans suddenly being respectful now the mans gone proper brave of them wasnt it and theyll be back calling him a rat next week anyway

The key thing for me is that Madrid always had a right side that felt dependable because he gave them that stability and aggression without needing to dominate the ball. That sort of role is easy to overlook until it disappears, and then the whole setup looks a bit softer

It is a fitting farewell for a player who represented continuity more than glamour. That matters in a team built around constant change.

people always say these goodbyes are overdone but when a player stays through that much success and leaves with 27 trophies its hard not to feel something about it and the fact he came through there makes it even bigger because it feels like the whole story started and ended in the same place
