Cherki Magic Has Everyone Raving

People keep talking as if the other side are just making up the hype but thats nonsense because Ivory Coast have had to deal with a player who keeps dragging defenders out of shape and forcing decisions every time he gets near the ball, and yes France have more names all over the pitch, but that does not mean the performance should be reduced to just another nice highlight, he has been the one making things happen and if anything the criticism should be aimed at the people who still act shocked when a gifted player actually shows it on a big stage, let the lad breathe and enjoy the football instead of trying to turn everything into a debate about whether he is allowed to be good

honestly the way some people talk about flair players is embarrassing because the second someone does a few clever touches everybody wants to act like it is all smoke and mirrors but you can see with cherki that there is actual intelligence in the movement and the weight of the touch and the way he opens his body to create space and that is what makes it different from random trickery and i swear if a player like this was in a bigger shirt half the internet would be calling him a generational genius already but because people like to pick favourites they start with the doubt first and then pretend they are being serious about analysis

The best thing about him is that he seems to enjoy the pressure rather than shrink from it, and that is rare enough as it is. You can tell the crowd reacts before the move is even finished because they know something is about to happen, and that anticipation is half the fun. It also makes me laugh how quickly football discourse turns into comparisons and legacy talk because one minute we are watching a lovely goal and the next people are deciding who he reminds them of, which is all part of the madness really, but still, he does have that sort of aura where every touch feels like a small event and that is not something you can coach into most players

The problem with the criticism he gets is that people always want to reduce him to one weakness and ignore everything else he brings, especially the creativity and the ability to unbalance a defence with a single touch, and tonight he has absolutely punished that mindset because every time he got the ball you could feel the tension building and some of the defending around him looked completely rattled, which is exactly why I do not get why anyone would still sit there acting like he is just a flashy luxury player when he is clearly the one making the game move, proper nonsense that people still need convincing

France look far more dangerous when the ball is going through him because he actually wants to face up defenders and take responsibility, which creates a different kind of threat than the usual safe circulation you get from top teams. It also forces the opposition line to back off a bit, and that gives the rest of the attackers more room to work in between the lines, so the tactical ripple effect is pretty clear even from one moment like this and if more teams used players like that properly the game would be much less sterile

The key detail is not just the goal, it is the way he manipulates the defender before the finish. That sort of movement forces mistakes and creates space for everyone else. It is easy to see why people are excited, but the real value is how much he changes the shape of the attack when he is on the ball.

i dont even care if people think its over the top this is exactly why i watch football because someone like cherki can just flip the mood of a game in one touch and suddenly everyones alive again and the defenders are just chasing shadows and its brilliant and i know people will say calm down but nah let people enjoy things for once
