Manchester City have announced a new multi-year partnership with Durex as their Official Health and Wellness Partner, and unsurprisingly the thread has gone exactly where you would expect it to go. The jokes about protection, clean sheets and being “fucked” are doing the rounds already.

It is one of those announcements that feels tailor-made for football banter, whether you think it is pure marketing, a bit of fun, or just another excuse for everyone to make the same joke. City fans will probably shrug it off, but rival fans are absolutely feasting on this one.

Still, it is hard not to laugh at the timing and the reactions. Sometimes football social media is just one big circle of the same gag, and this feels like a proper example of that.

Honestly this is one of those sponsorships that sounds like it was made in a group chat and somehow got signed off, and fair play because the banter writes itself, but at the same time City really do keep finding ways to make themselves the centre of every joke and now it is protection this protection that, clean sheets, charges, all of it, and you just know rival fans are going to be unbearable for weeks, still i cannot lie it is funny as hell and the Haaland adverts are going to be absolute scenes if they happen, proper peak football internet stuff, City fans will say it is just business but everyone else is already in the mud and loving it, mad really, absolute madness, proper taking the piss now

Nah I am actually defending City here because this is not some end of civilisation moment it is just a sponsor and everyone is acting like they have committed a crime by mentioning a brand, football clubs do this sort of thing all the time and the only reason it is getting piled on is because it is City and people are desperate to turn everything into 115 charges banter, which is fair enough for a laugh but at some point it gets tedious, they are still a huge club with massive global appeal and brands want that exposure, so of course Durex are involved, and honestly the jokes about protection and being fucked are so predictable they are basically written before the announcement even lands, let the club get their money and move on ffs

It is a clever bit of branding because it keeps City in the conversation for reasons that are not even football related. The comments are all the same gag, but that tells you the partnership is doing exactly what a sponsor wants: attention. Simple, effective, and a bit ridiculous in the best way.

I think people are overdoing the outrage, to be honest. It is just a commercial deal and the jokes are the real story.

the whole thing is just begging for the same punchlines isnt it like protection this clean sheets that and then someone always tries to be the funniest lad in the room and ends up saying the exact same thing as everyone else anyway still cant blame them because city and durex is mad enough to make you laugh on sight

From a marketing point of view it is pretty straightforward. City get a headline and Durex get their name attached to a club that will be discussed everywhere, which is exactly why these partnerships happen. The humour is unavoidable, but the business logic is not complicated at all.

I can see both sides here. It is a bit cringe because the joke is obvious, but it is also harmless and kind of perfect for football banter. You cannot really complain when a sponsorship announcement lands this neatly for everyone else.

if you actually look at it the whole thing is less about the joke and more about city knowing how to turn every bit of attention into a win for themselves because even when people are mocking them they are still the ones being talked about and that is the game now really clubs want reach not respect and this is pure reach
