City's £106m Anderson bid is mad

Manchester City have reportedly made a verbal offer worth £106m plus add-ons for Elliot Anderson, and the numbers in this market just keep getting more ridiculous. The fee could go beyond £120m, which is the sort of figure that makes you stop and wonder how we got here.

Forest are entitled to push the price as high as they can, especially with the way Premier League clubs keep bidding each other up. But even by modern standards, this feels like another sign that the market has completely lost the plot.

It also says a lot about how clubs are now forced to shop around, because paying this kind of money for one midfielder has become normal enough to cause barely a blink. City can obviously do it, but for everyone else it just makes recruitment even harder.

This is exactly why nobody can take transfer fees seriously anymore because every summer it just gets worse and worse and now we are at the point where a midfielder is being talked about like he is some kind of once in a generation superstar and maybe he is a very good player and maybe he will be class for years but £106m plus add ons taking it beyond £120m is absolutely bonkers and it makes everyone else in the league look stupid because if this is the benchmark then what is anyone else supposed to pay for a decent player now every club is going to point at this and demand stupid money and then people act shocked when deals collapse it is just the same cycle over and over and over and honestly it feels like the whole thing is detached from football now

City are clearly paying for profile, age, and ceiling as much as current output. If Forest hold out for a fixed fee near that level, it is because they know the market for top midfielders is already warped.

cant lie this is the sort of fee that makes you stare at your screen for a bit and just laugh because how can one player keep getting valued like this when a year ago people wouldve said it was impossible and yet here we are again with another club testing the ceiling and everyone acting like its normal

the pl market is just broken now and every club knows it so they all demand stupid fees for anyone with potential and then fans act surprised when even good players cost a fortune it just feels like the whole thing has gone past sensible numbers

The officials have nothing to do with the fee itself but the whole setup of the league does my head in because once one club starts paying these sorts of numbers everyone else is forced to follow and then the entire market gets dragged up and up and up and the people running the game just stand there acting like it is all fine and dandy while clubs outside the top spenders get squeezed out and the fans are told to accept it as ambition when really it is just financial madness and no one is ever held to account for how absurd it has become

Imagine being a Forest fan and seeing your club go from selling a kid for peanuts to being in the middle of a hundred mil bidding war its hilarious and tragic at the same time because one minute you are thinking nice profit and the next minute City are throwing around numbers that sound like they came from a video game and everyone else is just sat there with their jaw on the floor
