City's Enzo banner has the internet in stitches

Manchester City hanging a massive Welcome back, Enzo banner before the Bournemouth game has properly set people off. It does feel very City in the sense that even a supposed bit of warmth somehow ends up looking like a corporate campaign item rather than a proper terrace moment

The funniest part is how many people immediately went to the wrong Enzo, because same, my brain did the exact same thing for a second. And then once you clock what it is, the whole thing just becomes even more absurd

Fair play if you think it's harmless, but there is definitely something a bit soulless about it compared to an actual fan-made tifo. Still, it has given everyone plenty to laugh at before kick-off, which is probably the most memorable thing about it already

Honestly i dont even care if people want to call it corporate or cringe because at the end of the day it is still a club trying to show some kind of emotion and people act like City are not allowed to do anything without it being used as another stick to beat them with, the lad has come back, theyve put a banner up, big deal, but the way some people are acting like this is proof the club has no soul is ridiculous when loads of teams would do the exact same thing if they had the same sort of staff and budget and half the noise around them, it is just another excuse to pile on them when really the football should be the thing people talk about

city fans really cant win can they, if they do nothing people say no atmosphere, if they do a banner people say corporate slop, its just endless at this point and half the replies are acting like theyve never seen a club try to do something a bit extra before

Reminds me of when our local pub tried to do a big welcome back thing for one of the lads who had been away for ages and they printed this massive sign that looked dead posh and everyone laughed because it was meant to be heartfelt but ended up looking like something from a recruitment office, proper weird vibes, and then the bloke who it was for just stood there grinning like an idiot because he was just happy to be back and nobody wanted to tell him the sign looked like it had been made by a marketing team with too much time on their hands, this gives me the exact same feeling because the intent is probably harmless but the execution is so clean and polished it loses all charm and becomes funny for all the wrong reasons

The whole thing is made worse by how these clubs can turn even a banner into some polished PR exercise, but the officials and organisers always seem to go along with it when it suits them and then act surprised when people call it soulless, it is not just the banner either, it is the whole environment around it where every little thing feels manufactured and approved and packaged, and football used to have a bit of mess and character to it, now you get this kind of glossy nonsense and everyone is meant to clap along like it is meaningful, absolute joke really

Bournemouth fans unveiling the same banner is elite trolling tbh, proper little wind up merchants, imagine turning up expecting a warm welcome and seeing the exact same thing aimed back at you, absolute scenes

My idiot brain saw it and thought it was some kind of LinkedIn tribute before i even processed it, so fair play to whoever made it because theyve somehow produced the most soulless football banner possible

Enzo just gets on my nerves because everything about this feels so overdone and weird, the banner, the timing, the whole welcome back nonsense, it all feels like somebody in the club office decided they needed a moment and forced one into existence, and then people are supposed to pretend it is classy, but all i can see is a player being turned into a brand asset, which is exactly what modern football does to everyone, and with him in particular it just lands even worse because he already has that smug look about him, so you put a giant banner up and instead of feeling emotional it just makes you roll your eyes and think here we go again with another plastic club presentation

At first glance I thought people were overreacting, because a banner is just a banner and clubs do these things all the time, but the more I look at it the more it really does feel like something designed in a boardroom rather than by actual supporters, and that is probably why it has landed so badly with people online, because it has that polished, overproduced feel that makes everything seem a bit fake, and once you notice how much he looks like Pep it becomes even harder to take seriously, which is funny in itself, but then you start thinking about how football has drifted into this weird place where every gesture has to be branded and every emotion has to be packaged and sold and honestly it makes me a bit sad because even the nice moments end up looking like adverts, and now im sat here annoyed over a banner like some proper melt and i hate that this is where the game is at because it just feels wrong and overly slick and completely missing the point
