Class tribute to Kevin Keegan at St James’ Park

Really lovely to see Newcastle and Liverpool fans come together for Kevin Keegan at St James’ Park. Whatever colours you wear, that was a proper tribute to a proper legend.

Wor Flags have done it again with a display that looks absolutely first class, and the away end joining in makes it feel even bigger. That’s the sort of thing that reminds you football can still be about respect as well as rivalry.

Keegan means a lot to both clubs and to English football more broadly, so fair play to everyone involved. Absolute class all round.
 
People keep acting like this is just some nice display but for Newcastle fans Keegan is part of the whole identity of the club and you can see it every time they do something like this, the atmosphere, the respect, the way the away fans joined in, that is what football should be about and not all the plastic nonsense people bang on about all the time, Liverpool fans did themselves proud there as well and anyone trying to make it about banter is just missing the point honestly
 
On a basic level this is exactly why pre-match tributes work when they are done well because both sets of fans buy into it and the whole ground feels united for a minute, and Keegan is one of those figures who clearly crosses club lines. Wor Flags deserve credit, the away end deserves credit, and it all lands because the man actually mattered. But then you get the usual online crowd turning every decent moment into an argument about who is more authentic or who sang louder or who had the better banner and it just ruins it ffs can we not have one moment without people dragging it into the mud
 
Honestly the tribute is lovely and all but people are acting like this means the player himself was some untouchable saint and I just cannot get over how certain names get treated like footballing royalty forever, Keegan this Keegan that, and then every thread turns into a parade of nostalgia merchants who want to pretend the modern game has no soul unless it is wrapped in some old legend story, and fair enough he clearly meant a lot to people but the way some of you gush over it like it is the second coming is a bit much imo
 
That is one of those moments that reminds you football can still be genuinely moving when both sets of supporters are on the same page. Keegan clearly means a lot to Newcastle and Liverpool fans alike, and the display looked excellent from what was shown.
 
A tribute like this works because it is simple and recognisable and it lets the crowd do the talking rather than overloading it with noise or gimmicks. Keegan is one of those figures who sits in football memory for a reason, and the fact both sets of fans responded says a lot. Then again you already know some people online will still find a way to turn it into a debate about who has the best tifos or which club has the better culture or whether modern fans are ruining the game and before you know it we are five comments deep into nonsense and someone is calling everyone a tourist and acting like they invented football support

It is hard not to respect that from both sides because it felt genuine and not forced, and those are the best tributes. Newcastle have always known how to put on a proper display, but Liverpool fans doing their bit as well made it feel like a real football moment rather than just a home crowd patting itself on the back. People talking rubbish about it being overhyped need to give their heads a wobble because this is exactly the sort of thing that gives the game some heart and if you cannot appreciate that then honestly you are just miserable for the sake of it
