Colombia's disallowed goal vs Portugal

People will laugh at Colombia for this but that is harsh because you can see the whole moment gets ripped away by a decision that nobody in the stadium can really process properly, and once the flag goes up the defending side suddenly looks smarter than they were and the attacking side gets treated like mugs, which is unfair because they still had to create it and finish it, and the emotion of that should count for something even if the line says otherwise, football needs a bit more common sense or else every tight goal just becomes another argument about pixels and everybody loses the joy of the moment

honestly i dont even know how youre meant to celebrate a goal like that anymore because by the time the ball hits the net everyone is just waiting for some bloke to ruin it with a flag and a monitor and all the nonsense that comes after

I was in the pub for a cup game once and a lad in the corner celebrated a goal so hard he spilled half a pint over the table, then the screen showed the flag and the whole place went from screaming to groaning in about two seconds flat, proper dead silence after that, and this clip gives me the exact same feeling because you can almost hear the collective sigh when the moment gets taken away, football is brutal like that and it always finds a way to make grown men look devastated over a toe or a boot or whatever the hell it was

The way some people are pretending this is some brilliant piece of officiating is hilarious, as if the lino has got superhuman eyesight and not just guessed on a chaotic angle like the rest of us would

If the line is drawn correctly then I get why it is offside, but that does not mean the whole thing feels right. The problem is that the closer these calls get, the less satisfying the game becomes, and you end up arguing about millimetres instead of the actual football. It turns a great moment into a lecture and honestly I hate it, I hate watching celebrations get cancelled by a frame and I hate how everyone is expected to nod along like this is progress because it feels like nonsense

This is the classic problem with marginal offsides: the decision may be defensible, but the experience for everyone else is awful. If the margin is so small that it needs endless replaying and arguing, then the game has already moved beyond what most people can accept intuitively. That is why these moments always blow up.

The defending line probably held its shape well enough to make the call possible, but once the attacker breaks it by even the smallest amount the whole move is dead. The issue is that players and fans see a goal, while the officials see a frame and a line, and those two versions of football never really meet

This is exactly the sort of call that makes fans lose patience with the whole offside process. The flag might be correct, but the celebration gets wiped out before it can even breathe, and that sucks imo
