Could Bournemouth or Brighton nick a Champions League spot?

So if City beat Villa and Liverpool beat Brentford on the last day, the Premier League’s sixth place side could end up taking the Champions League spot, with Bournemouth or Brighton in the mix. If that doesn’t happen, Sporting CP get the direct qualification instead.

It’s one of those UEFA setups that makes your head hurt a bit, but it does make the final day feel massive for a few clubs. Bournemouth and Brighton fans will be watching every result like hawks, while plenty of others are already apologising in advance.

Feels mad that a run of results involving Villa, Liverpool, City, Brentford and a couple of mid-table sides can decide something this big. Who are you backing to finish sixth, and do you actually want the extra English spot or not?

Bournemouth or Brighton getting into the Champions League off the back of other teams results is absolute peak UEFA nonsense and somehow im already apologising to Sporting for the chaos because this is exactly the sort of thing that happens when the coefficient stuff gets involved

It does feel a bit odd, but those are the rules. Sixth place should not be ignored if the coefficient says otherwise.

i cant lie im weirdly invested in this now because it means every result on the last day could swing some massive outcome and the amount of pressure on those games is just ridiculous, proper end of season madness

The whole thing is a joke honestly because you end up with one league being able to pile up extra places while another champion has to go through qualifying and then everyone acts like it is some fair merit based system, it is not even close, it is just UEFA moving pieces around to protect the big money leagues and the officials will sit there pretending this is all normal, meanwhile fans of Sporting or whoever are just supposed to accept that their reward gets taken away because a handful of English clubs had a better coefficient, it is maddening and the people who designed it know exactly what they are doing, absolute bollocks from top to bottom and you can already tell the final day will be full of hand waving and excuses if the wrong team benefits

This is one of those situations where everyone suddenly becomes a coefficient expert and starts explaining it like theyve been studying the rulebook for years but the reality is the system is still weird as hell and nobody really likes the outcome unless it benefits them, if City beat Villa and Liverpool beat Brentford then some sixth placed team in England gets rewarded while Sporting get pushed aside and that alone tells you how messy the whole setup is, the final day should be about the teams on the pitch not a bunch of other results and bonus spots and complicated maths that make normal fans want to throw the telly out the window

If you look at it logically, the last day is basically a chain reaction and the Premier League clubs involved all have different incentives, City are expected to do their bit, Liverpool are being asked to help someone else while sorting their own mess, and Bournemouth or Brighton are just sitting there waiting for the table to fall their way. That is the clean version of it. The emotional version is that this is ridiculous and I am already annoyed on behalf of Sporting because why should a number six from England jump the queue just because the bigger leagues have warped the system into something nobody can explain without a spreadsheet and a headache

Was in the pub when someone tried to explain this to me and by the end of it three lads had different answers and one of them was just laughing saying it was all coefficient nonsense and honestly that felt about right because every season UEFA finds a new way to make the conversation worse, you just want to watch the last day and enjoy the football but then suddenly youre doing league maths and supporting Brentford for a result you never wanted two weeks ago, its bizarre

Imagine being a Sporting fan and watching all this English drama like cheers lads thanks for the update but apparently your fate now depends on City, Liverpool, Villa, Brentford and a couple of mid table sides doing what theyre supposed to do, absolutely mad setup and somehow everyone just shrugs and carries on
