Pau Cubarsí being out in front for the Golden Boy race is pretty telling. It says a lot about how highly rated he is already, especially when people are talking about him like he is one of the standout young defenders around.

That said, these awards can be a bit of a circus sometimes. Being top in the race now does not always mean much in the end, but it is still a strong sign of how much hype he has around him.

Either way, it is another reminder that the next crop of young players is already here and getting talked about properly. Interested to see whether he keeps it up or whether this turns into one of those awards that changes hands a few times before the finish.

It makes sense if you value defenders who are calm in possession and difficult to drag out of shape. The award often leans toward attackers, so for a centre-back to be leading suggests he is being seen as genuinely exceptional rather than just promising.

On paper it is a fair reflection of the hype around him because people love a young defender who looks composed and mature, and that is exactly the sort of profile that gets pushed to the front in these races. But these things always turn into a popularity contest the moment the noise starts building, and then everyone acts shocked when the list changes and suddenly it is all about who had the biggest month rather than who actually looked the best over time. The whole Golden Boy thing is basically a weekly referendum on vibes half the time, one good run and people start talking like the trophy has already been engraved, one bad stretch and they are calling the player overrated and finished. It is exhausting honestly, just let the lad play and stop making every young player into a marketing campaign ffs

A measured reading is that he is probably benefiting from being both highly visible and highly rated, which is usually enough to put a player at the top of this kind of conversation. But the moment you start chasing awards like this too hard you end up in a weird place where every touch becomes part of a narrative and every mistake gets overblown, and that is before people even start arguing about whether the award actually means anything. Half the replies will be pretending they have watched him every week anyway, which is always funny because the internet suddenly turns into a room full of scouts the second a young player trends. Then it becomes the usual cycle of hype, backlash, revisionism, and everyone acting like they were always right. Football discourse is so cooked man

The thing with these youth awards is that they usually tell you more about the current mood than the actual long term picture. Cubarsí being top is a good sign for him, but people will still swing from calling him the future of defending to saying it means nothing the second another name gets a bit of momentum, and that is just how it goes nowadays. Everyone wants to be first to say a youngster is special, then first to tear them down when the hype gets too loud, and it gets ridiculous very quickly because nobody can just enjoy a player anymore without turning it into a debate about legacy and value and all that nonsense, proper internet brain rot

i dont really buy the whole he is already clear take because these races can swing fast and one bad spell changes the whole mood, people are acting like its locked in when its really just a snapshot and not much more

The officials of football discourse have already decided this one then havent they because the second a young player gets a bit of shine everyone piles in with the same recycled lines and acts like there is some objective truth to it when half the time it is just hype fed by clips and headlines and fanbase bias, and then if he has one average game the same lot will start saying he was never all that and the award is a joke and the media are carrying him and honestly it does my head in because the whole thing becomes less about the player and more about who can shout the loudest about him, absolute nonsense from start to finish
