If you look at it tactically, a young centre-back getting this level of recognition usually means he is doing the basics at a very high level and not just relying on highlights or flashy moments, and that matters because defenders are judged on consistency more than anything else. But the race itself can be swayed by reputation and club size so I would not treat it as proof of anything beyond how highly he is rated right now
 
i remember when a mate of mine used to say the same thing about every young player who had one good month and then half a season later he would act like he never said it so this whole thing just makes me laugh because the cycle never changes and the internet just feeds it more every year
 
It is a fair thing to discuss because being top of a race like this does show how highly rated he is. At the same time, these awards can be very momentum-driven, so I would not read too much into it beyond the fact that he is clearly in the conversation.
