Donovan takes aim at Pulisic

Pulisic is the one who gets all the shine and all the excuses and honestly it drives me up the wall because every time he goes missing people start blaming the system or the hype or some vague outside pressure when the reality is he has to be better and he just isnt doing enough for the level of attention he gets, its the same story over and over and over again and the way he carries himself just adds to it because he always looks like he thinks the world owes him something and if you are the face of a national team then you need to act like it and deliver like it and not hide behind sponsors and family and whatever else people want to put around him
 
i used to really want him to succeed because he was the obvious face of the team and it felt good having someone to back but the more this goes on the more i just feel tired of the whole thing and i cant even tell if thats fair or if im just fed up with the endless discourse around him
 
People keep piling on Pulisic like he is personally responsible for every problem around US Soccer and I think that is unfair because he is still the one who takes the hits when things go wrong and the expectation on him has always been ridiculous from day one, if the sponsors and the staff and the media have built him into some untouchable product then of course the backlash is going to be ugly but that does not mean the player himself is some fraud, he is a good player who has had to carry a silly amount of noise and pressure and maybe he has not handled all of it perfectly but that is not the same as saying he deserves to be treated like he is the villain of the piece
 
There is probably truth on both sides here. Donovan may be reacting to a real problem with the way Pulisic is surrounded and presented, but the level of pile-on from fans is also a bit over the top. It feels like the hype has made everyone more extreme than they need to be.
