Landon Donovan has gone in on Christian Pulisic here, saying people around U.S. Soccer, sponsors, teammates and staff are fed up with how things are handled around him, and that there’s a sense you can’t even get near him.

It’s a pretty strong quote and, as ever, the reaction is split between people saying Pulisic is overhyped and others thinking Donovan is just being a bit bitter. The whole thing has turned into a wider argument about hype, leadership and whether Pulisic has ever really lived up to the huge attention around him.

Feels like one of those stories where the football takes a back seat to the drama, but there’s clearly a lot of frustration bubbling away on both sides.

pulisic gets treated like american messi and then everyone acts shocked when the reality is hes just a good player not some world class icon and the whole thing feels forced as hell anyway

the issue is the hype machine not just the player imo if you build someone up as the face of the nation every bad touch becomes a crisis and every decent game gets turned into a coronation

There is probably a real tension between how Pulisic is marketed and how he is actually perceived inside the setup. If the people around him are trying to protect him too much, that can end up isolating him rather than helping him.

There is a fair point buried in all this, because once a player becomes the face of a national team, every little thing around him gets magnified and the noise starts to drown out the actual football. But at the same time, Pulisic has been carried by that hype for years and he has never really shut it down with performances that make the discussion feel ridiculous. That is why people are so annoyed, because it always becomes a culture war about sponsors and image and who said what behind the scenes instead of just being about whether he delivers when it matters. And honestly the whole thing is exhausting, the endless excuses, the endless branding, the endless talk about him being untouchable, it just gets on your nerves after a while and makes the reaction feel even harsher because everyone is so fed up with it

the officials in this whole american media circus are basically the sponsors and the hype men pretending to be neutral voices, they push the same lad as if he is some untouchable star and then act surprised when people get sick of it, its the same with every overcovered player, the narrative gets built before the football even starts and then when he has an average tournament suddenly everyone is talking about attitude and personality and whether hes approachable instead of just saying he didnt do enough, its all a load of bollocks really and the way they frame everything is so manipulative you can see why former players get pissed off because the whole conversation is already rigged by the people around him

A sensible reading is that Donovan is reacting to the way Pulisic is packaged as much as the player himself. Once that kind of bubble forms, everybody ends up talking around the football and you get this weird distance between the public image and the dressing room reality. Still, it is funny how quickly this has turned into a referendum on American soccer culture, because one quote about being hard to reach has somehow become a full blown debate about leadership, marketing, and who gets to be the face of the sport in the States and frankly that says more about the environment than the lad himself

if he was half as good as the hype merchants say this would not even be a story and yet here we are acting like hes some untouchable genius when he has been bang average and the whole thing is embarrassing

nah i dont buy that hes some diva because of one quote it sounds more like people are projecting all their own frustration onto him and turning him into a villain for clicks

american football discourse is genuinely hilarious because one minute hes the chosen one and the next hes temu lando or captain paper mache and everyone acts like theyve cracked the code on the whole nation its mad
