DR Congo fans chanting Messi at Ronaldo

That is absolutely wild from DR Congo fans, chanting Messi in front of Ronaldo like that is pure wind-up merchant behaviour. You can argue it is childish, but it is also exactly the sort of thing that gets the whole football internet talking

Ronaldo looked like he was trying his best not to give them anything, which probably made it even funnier for everyone else watching. The whole thing feels like a proper modern football moment, half banter, half psychological nonsense

Still, you do have to laugh at how much attention one chant can create when it involves these two names. Football fans love a bit of drama, and this had it in spades

i was in the pub when someone started doing the same chant at a mate who was a massive ronaldo fan and he nearly launched his pint across the room honestly football does this to people for no reason at all, one stupid chant and suddenly everyone is acting like its the world cup final, proper daft but you cant deny it gets a reaction out of people and thats half the fun really

It is clearly meant to unsettle him, but the best response is probably to stay calm and let the game do the talking. If he reacts, the crowd wins. If he ignores it, the chant loses its bite.

That crowd know exactly what theyre doing really, its not about Messi its about getting under Ronaldos skin and forcing him to think about it for a second, simple as that, and the fact people keep pretending its just harmless noise is a bit naive imo

People act like this is some grand statement about football culture but really it is just fans doing what fans do when they know a player has a reputation for wanting everything centred on him, they pick the one thing that might annoy him and repeat it until it becomes the whole story, and honestly Ronaldo has been around long enough that none of this should surprise anyone, he has seen every possible version of crowd nonsense by now and still people talk like he is some fragile rookie being bullied by schoolkids, it is all a bit overdone but the internet loves a moment like this because it lets everyone pile in and pretend they are above it while still laughing at it

Ronaldo is the centre of everything with this sort of clip and that is exactly why the chant lands, because people know he is the one player who will make the moment about himself whether he wants to or not, and you can tell he hates giving anyone that satisfaction, which is why it keeps happening, and lets be honest the whole thing is funny because it is so obvious that it gets in his head even when he tries to act above it, the man has spent years building this image and then one crowd just turns up and says Messi over and over and suddenly everyone is watching him instead of the actual football, which is why he still drives people mad and gets them talking like he is some final boss of ego

It is funny because the chant only works if people already expect a reaction, which says more about the player than the crowd. Still, he handled it better than a lot would, tbh

On a basic level, this is just crowd psychology and a very old football trick, because if you know a player has an ego you needle that ego and see what happens. But the longer this goes on the more it stops being about the chant and starts being about the whole Ronaldo discourse, and that is where it gets annoying because every thread becomes the same thing, people calling him finished, people calling everyone else bitter, people acting like they are the only sane one in the room, and it turns into a complete mess of hot takes and smugness and now half the internet is doing therapy sessions over a football chant and I am sick of it honestly

its funny how people act like this is some massive scandal when its just fans winding up a famous player and he didnt even react, everyone on here making it into a psychology lecture for no reason and acting like they know what he thinks

i cant lie i would have laughed if i was there, its one of those moments that makes the whole stadium feel alive and silly at the same time, football is better when the crowd is a bit cheeky
