Egypt complaint after Argentina defeat

I do think Egypt deserve a bit more respect than people are giving them because for long spells they were clearly in the game and at times they looked more organised than Argentina, but that is exactly why the complaint feels so unnecessary, because you can acknowledge good periods without pretending the officials decided the result. They had control, they lost it, and once the momentum shifted they could not get it back, and that is football. You can point to selective VAR or question a missed moment all you like, but turning it into a full on grievance after the final whistle just makes everyone look thin skinned and it ruins the conversation for the rest of us who actually want to talk about the match rather than another victimhood lecture

Argentina must be loving this because every time someone complains about them it just makes the whole thing even more dramatic and the neutral fans end up getting a proper soap opera out of it and Egypt are out here acting like the world ended because the ref did not give them a hug

What really annoys me is how quickly the officials become the whole story whenever a team loses and it is always the same nonsense where one camp says corruption and the other camp says stop crying and nobody actually discusses the decisions in a sensible way because the people in charge of the tournament never seem willing to explain anything clearly and then the ref gets thrown under the bus while everyone else washes their hands of it and moves on like it was nothing and honestly if VAR is going to be used this inconsistently then of course people are going to kick off because half the time it feels like there is one rule for one team and another rule for the rest and that is exactly why these complaints keep happening and why nobody trusts the process anymore

There is a legitimate conversation to be had about consistency in officiating and how VAR is applied, especially in a tournament setting where every team expects the same standard. But once Egypt went 2-0 up and then allowed the match to swing so violently, the complaint started to feel like a distraction from the football itself, and now the whole thing is spiralling into blame and bitterness and everyone is shouting about conspiracies and pride and it is just getting messier by the minute because nobody wants to say we messed up and move on

If one player or one official is going to get dragged through this then it should be the people who let the game slip, because the whole complaint feels like a way to dodge the fact that the team stopped doing the basics and let Argentina back in and now everyone is acting like the referee personally took the points off them and that is just embarrassing to watch

On paper this is just a complaint about officiating after a narrow defeat, but the reaction shows how little trust there is in refereeing and VAR right now. If Egypt felt one decision was badly handled then I understand why they would push back, but the problem is that once you have lost a 2-0 lead and the match has swung, people stop listening to the nuance and just hear excuses and that is why this has blown up so badly because now it is all blame, all noise, all nonsense and everyone is acting like the whole tournament is a scam when really it is just another team failing to see a game out and ffs it is tiring
