FAI pull support for Infantino

It reads like a warning shot more than anything else, and those can matter if other associations decide to follow suit. FIFA only changes when the noise gets loud enough imo

What a surprise, another day another bit of FIFA nonsense and people pretending this is some noble institution when its basically just power games and self preservation at this point, absolute joke really

This feels like one of those moments where people will either say it means nothing or say it is the start of something bigger, and truthfully it could be either depending on what happens next. If the FAI have actually decided the support is no longer worth giving, then clearly something behind the scenes has annoyed them enough to make it public, and that is not nothing. But football governance is full of these little flashes of outrage that disappear the moment everybody gets comfortable again, so I am not going to pretend this automatically changes the landscape. Still, it is hard not to respect any association that is willing to say this out loud because too often it feels like everyone is scared to upset the people at the top and that silence just lets the same nonsense keep rolling on and on and on and it gets so tiring seeing the same old faces in these roles acting like they are above criticism when really people are just fed up with the whole bloody circus

you just know some fifa suit is sat there acting like this is all perfectly fine while their mates are telling them to ignore it and carry on like nothing happened, proper state of it

At face value, withdrawing support is a pretty direct political move and it usually means an association wants to be seen on the record. That said, football bodies love a dramatic gesture when it costs them nothing, and that is why I am cautious about reading too much into it. Still, if the FAI thought the better option was to go public rather than keep it internal, then the relationship must already be pretty strained, and that is where the interesting stuff begins because once one federation breaks ranks the rest start wondering whether they should too, and then suddenly everyone is pretending they always had concerns, which is classic football governance behaviour and honestly it never stops being a bit grim

It is mainly significant as a political signal rather than an immediate practical change. FIFA leadership usually survives isolated criticism, but public withdrawals like this can matter if they encourage others to break ranks. The size of the reaction will depend on whether other associations follow.

At first glance this looks like a fairly standard governance row, another association making a point about leadership and trying to show some independence. But the more you think about it, the more it feels like it exposes how fragile all this football politics really is, because these people only hold power as long as everybody keeps nodding along. Once one body says no, even in a symbolic way, the whole performance starts to look a bit silly, and that is why I think this matters more than the usual online shrugging suggests. Then again, knowing football, it will probably turn into three days of statements and then nothing, and that is what annoys me because the game is always stuck with these self important suits who act like they are guardians of the sport while doing absolutely nothing to earn the trust they demand and honestly it is just exhausting

fair play to the fai if theyve actually stuck to it because football politics is usually all talk and no teeth and this at least sounds like someone refusing to keep smiling through the nonsense

Had a pint with a lad last night who swore blind that none of this stuff ever matters until it suddenly does, and he was going on about football politics like it was all smoke and mirrors and to be fair he had a point, because most of the time these announcements just vanish into the background noise, but then you get one that feels a bit sharper than the rest and people actually start paying attention, and this sounds like one of those, not because it changes everything instantly but because it shows somebody has finally got fed up enough to make a scene and sometimes that is the only language these people understand
