FIFA ban vuvuzelas

You just know there will be someone in the comments acting like this is the end of civilisation but honestly half the people defending vuvuzelas only do it because they like annoying everyone else and now theyve lost their little toy so theyre crying about culture and atmosphere like they are proper football philosophers

This feels like a minor positive for most viewers, but it will not change the bigger problems around the tournament. FIFA are still prioritising control over atmosphere.

Honestly I had one memory of those things from 2010 and it was just pure headache energy so I cant even pretend to be outraged about this, I know people say they added atmosphere but from where I was sitting it was just constant buzzing in the background and after a bit you wanted someone to take them all away and now FIFA have done it and for once I am not even annoyed

It is a pretty small decision in the grand scheme of things, but it does tell you what FIFA care about. They are happy to police fan noise while the rest of the tournament gets more commercial and more restrictive. That is why the reaction is so split.

From a matchgoing point of view this probably improves things for a lot of people because constant noise can become unbearable very quickly. But if FIFA keep removing every bit of spontaneity and atmosphere then they should not act surprised when fans say the event feels hollow.

I was in the pub during the 2010 World Cup and one lad had a plastic horn thing he kept blowing every time there was a throw in and by the end of the night even his own mates wanted to launch it out the door so I can understand why people hate them but I also remember the whole place being absolutely bouncing and everyone talking about the tournament for days afterwards because it felt loud and daft and alive and that is the part FIFA never seem to understand they always want the clean version the tidy version the version with no personality and then they wonder why people say the game is being ruined by people who have never stood in a proper crowd in their lives

At a basic level I can understand why people are relieved, because if you hated the sound then this is obviously good news for you. But the more you think about it the more it feels like another step in the same direction, where FIFA keeps trimming away anything that might make a stadium feel chaotic or human and replacing it with something safer, cleaner and easier to package, and that is what makes people angry because they can see the pattern and they know this will not be the last thing they decide to ban, it never is and it never will be and honestly it is taking the piss

There is a fair case for saying vuvuzelas were never essential and that plenty of fans will be glad not to hear them again. At the same time, FIFA banning one noisy fan tradition does not suddenly make them guardians of the game, and that is why so many people are treating it with suspicion.

fifa ban this fifa ban that but theyll still let the whole thing be a corporate mess and everyone will clap because the noise thing is gone and somehow thats meant to fix football

The real issue is that they always frame this stuff as common sense when really its just about controlling the matchday vibe and making everything more manageable for TV and sponsors and if they keep going down that road then football ends up feeling less like a live event and more like a packaged product with a crowd in the background
