I was in a pub once when my mate who supports a proper random lower league side started going on about how a club can carry a whole city and everyone thought he was just being sentimental after three pints but he was dead right and this is exactly the sort of thing he meant, you see the colour, the streets, the people all moving together and it makes you think football can still feel local and alive instead of just being streamed on a phone while you check ten other things, absolutely brilliant stuff and I'd take this over some soulless launch event any day
 
You can analyse this all day and still come back to the same point: the visual identity matters, the location matters, and the crowd matters. Put all that together and you get something people remember. And yet every time football gives us a moment like this, someone wants to ruin it with cynicism or some daft argument about screens and modern fans and it just gets exhausting, because sometimes you can just say it looks brilliant and leave it at that, which is what I am trying to do before I start shouting at my own telly about everything else wrong with the game

People are quick to turn every big club moment into a joke but this is why supporters matter, this is why local identity matters, and this is why a celebration like this hits differently for the people involved, some of you are acting like it has to be some massive trophy parade to count but a century is a century and if the club and the city want to march together then fair enough because that is football at its best and anyone sneering at it is missing the whole point
 
Can we talk about how the officials always manage to ruin the mood of football even when nobody is even watching a match, somehow they would still find a way to make this about themselves if there was a whistle involved and that's exactly why people get fed up with the whole lot of them, absolute jobsworth energy every single time
 
This is why people fall in love with clubs in the first place. The colour, the streets, the energy, all of it comes together and you can feel the history in it. Then you remember how many matches get reduced to arguments online and it makes you want to scream because football can still look this alive and people still want to act like it's nothing
