Forest agree club-record fee for Liam Delap

Nottingham Forest agreeing a club-record fee for Liam Delap is the kind of transfer story that makes you do a double take. On one hand, it feels like a massive price for a striker who, by all the noise in the thread, had a very rough season. On the other, the market these days is absolutely cooked and clubs seem to be paying for potential, age and resale more than anything else.

Chelsea getting mentioned as if they’ve somehow pulled off another masterclass in selling is also very on-brand for the reactions here. A lot of people are baffled that a player can move on for more after a poor year, while others are already pointing out that Forest might be buying exactly the sort of physical, aggressive forward they need.

Either way, it’s clearly one of those deals that splits opinion straight away. Is this Forest overpaying, or is this just what the striker market looks like now?
 
Signed for £30m and somehow ends up moving again for £45m, that is absolutely ridiculous when you say it out loud. Chelsea really have turned the market into a joke and everyone else is just stood there clapping like idiots while the same clubs keep cashing in. Forest might be buying the profile they want but that fee is still mad, proper taking the piss if you ask me
 
This is less about Delap specifically and more about how the market rewards age, contract structure and upside. If a club believes he fits a system and can be developed, the fee becomes easier to justify. It still looks steep on the surface, though.
 
I was in the pub last night and even the lads who barely watch football were laughing at this sort of thing because it just sounds made up, like how can a striker have a rough season and then the number goes up anyway and everybody acts normal about it, honestly Chelsea and these big selling clubs have changed the game so much that fans are just sat there with their pints saying what the actual hell is going on and then Forest go and pay it and you know full well if he scores one scrappy goal everyone will pretend it was obvious all along
 
From a recruitment point of view, this is exactly why clubs keep paying these fees. Young English striker, room for growth, and a market that values upside over what happened last season. But the optics are still horrible when you look at the output and the price together, and that is why everyone is losing their heads over it. If Forest get a proper return then fair enough, but right now it looks like the whole thing has been priced by someone absolutely off their rocker and I cannot believe people are acting like this is normal because it is bloody not, it is mental
 
Forest probably see a striker they can use immediately, while Chelsea see a profitable asset cycle. Those two ideas can both be true.
 
Forest are clearly paying for the possibility that he looks different in a new setup, and that is fair enough on paper. Still, when the headline number is this high, people are always going to judge it against the season he just had imo
 
I dont care what anyone says, Delap has been getting treated like some elite sale piece when the actual football was nowhere near that level and people are acting like Chelsea have pulled off some sort of art project, it was a bad season, a really bad season, and now everyone is talking about profit like that erases the fact he didnt deliver, and the whole thing just winds me up because if this was any other club selling a player with that output everyone would be calling it a scam but because it is Chelsea people are weirdly impressed and I am sick of hearing about it
 
The fee is huge, but the market has been moving this way for a while now. If Forest think he suits their style and can improve with a more settled role, then there is logic there. It still feels like a gamble, though.
