France camp joking about Mbappé ‘Mobut’

Bit of a mad one from the France camp here. Dembélé and a few of the lads are apparently jokingly calling Mbappé “Mobut”, and the whole thing feels like peak football banter crossed with meme culture.

What stands out most is how relaxed the squad looks around him. For all the noise that usually follows big-name teams, this just reads like a group that’s properly enjoying itself.

Still, you can see why it’s got people talking. The nickname, the dictator reference, the plane chat, all of it is a bit out there, but football dressing rooms have always had their own strange humour.

It actually says a lot about the group dynamic if they can joke like this and still keep things tight. France look like they have a proper chemistry issue solved for once.

From a tactical point of view, this kind of squad harmony can matter a lot more than people admit. If the players trust each other and the mood stays light, you get better pressing, quicker combinations, less sulking when someone gets benched, and that can be the difference in a tournament. But then you also have Mbappé getting turned into some weird dictator meme and half the internet acting like it means the sky is falling, as if football banter in a camp is the end of civilisation, honestly people need to calm down because this is hilarious and the whole thing is just so stupid in the best way

The officials would probably find a way to book someone for this if they were on the pitch because that's just how football works now isnt it every little thing gets blown up and some ref or fourth official wants to make it about themselves even when its just lads joking around on a plane and the whole thing is clearly tongue in cheek but if it was on matchday you just know there'd be some bollocks about disrespect or unsporting conduct or whatever buzzword they hide behind these days and then everyone would be sat there wondering how a nickname becomes an incident and why do these people always act like the game needs saving from a few laughs when the real problem is the constant need to insert themselves into everything

The interesting part is less the nickname and more the fact the whole squad seems in on the joke. That usually points to a healthy dressing room rather than a team full of egos.

people are acting like this is some deep political statement when its just football lads chatting shite and making up stupid nicknames for each other as if that hasnt happened in every dressing room ever the internet really does love making everything sound more serious than it is

If the camp is this loose then thats a good sign because you dont want a squad full of tension before a big tournament and from what you can tell theyre all very comfortable with each other and taking the piss in a way that usually means the group is settled

Honestly this is the sort of thing you want to hear about a top international squad. Not the drama, not the ego nonsense, just players winding each other up and looking like mates. If they are comfortable enough to make jokes like this then fair enough, it probably means the atmosphere is better than people think and maybe that is why they always look so composed when things get difficult, but at the same time the nickname is so ridiculous that I cannot stop laughing and now I am imagining Mbappé sitting there pretending to be offended while everyone else is losing it and it is just the most football thing ever

I had a mate in the pub years ago who used to give everyone daft dictator nicknames whenever we were watching football and it always ended up with the whole table crying laughing because once one lad got a nickname it stuck for the whole season and nobody could escape it and this feels exactly like that sort of thing where the squad has that one guy who starts it and then everyone piles in and before you know it even the serious players are joining in and honestly I love that because football can be so overproduced and polished now that a bit of stupid human nonsense like this makes it feel normal again and if Mbappé is just sitting there taking it then fair play to him because that is the sort of confidence you either have or you fake very badly
