France camp joking about Mbappé ‘Mobut’

its mad how every time france post something from camp the comments turn into a whole documentary about vibes and leadership and power dynamics when its probably just the lads messing about and trying to kill time on a flight like normal people

The bigger takeaway is that the group seems comfortable enough to joke publicly without it turning into a mess. That kind of looseness can be a real advantage if it carries into performances, imo

The whole thing is probably best viewed as harmless dressing-room humour rather than anything more serious. France often look at their best when the squad feels connected, and this kind of banter suggests the mood is fairly healthy.

mobut on the plane while everyone pretends to be serious is exactly the sort of nonsense that makes international football worth watching the lads are probably dying laughing and some bloke in a suit is trying not to crack up in the background

People are overthinking this so much its unreal its just a bunch of footballers on a flight joking around and giving each other stupid nicknames and somehow that becomes a whole discourse about culture and politics and squad harmony and whatever else and honestly thats the internet in a nutshell because nobody can just laugh at something anymore without turning it into a thesis and the funniest part is the lads themselves are probably already onto the next joke while everyone else is writing essays about whether the atmosphere in the camp means theyll win something or whether it proves Mbappé is some kind of supreme leader and im sat here thinking football is meant to be fun and this is the kind of daft nonsense that makes it fun

The measured take is that this is probably just another example of a strong squad having enough comfort to joke around without it becoming awkward. The less measured take is that football Twitter and the wider internet will now spend the next day pretending they are experts on French dressing-room sociology because somebody made a dictator nickname and everyone wants to sound clever about it. Meanwhile the actual players are probably laughing, eating, and getting on with things like normal people, which is exactly why these little clips are always more entertaining than the polished PR stuff

I dont care how much people want to defend him Mbappé absolutely invites this sort of thing because of the way the whole football world treats him like some untouchable figure and then the moment someone gives him a stupid nickname everyone acts shocked as if players havent been winding each other up forever and it is always the same with him he gets built up into this massive brand and then every clip becomes a test of whether he is humble or arrogant or some other nonsense and honestly he probably just sits there knowing exactly what is going on while the rest of them are cracking up and I reckon the people who hate it are the ones who cant stand seeing him relaxed because it ruins the image they want to have of him
