Glasner’s shade at Spurs and the Eze line

It is a bit unnecessary, but it is also harmless football banter. The reaction probably makes it bigger than the quote itself.
 
The officials would probably find a way to book Spurs for this as well honestly, because how can a manager just casually drop that line and then everyone acts like its harmless, the media will laugh, the fans will laugh, and then next week the same people will moan about other managers being disrespectful, it is a complete joke, refs and officials never get blamed for the actual mess of the game but they somehow manage to let the whole thing get twisted into another circus, if anyone had any sense they would just keep the focus on the football and stop turning every interview into a sideshow
 
Glasner really looked at Spurs and said yeah let me add one more layer of misery for the lads, proper charity work that, absolutely ruthless and for what, just because he could, you have to respect the commitment to the bit even if it is a bit nasty
 
I actually think Spurs fans are being a bit harsh on this one because all he did was praise Arsenal and give Eze a bit of credit, which is fair enough when a player makes a big move and people want to frame it as some kind of betrayal, but that is just modern football discourse for you, everyone wants a villain and everyone wants a clip to go viral, and meanwhile Palace supporters are probably just happy to see one of their lads getting talked about like that, if anything the whole thing shows how much people still want personality from managers, because when they do say something with a bit of edge it instantly becomes a huge story and honestly I would rather that than another dead quote about taking it game by game
 
I think the main thing here is that Glasner clearly understands how to speak to the moment, and that is why this quote has gone so big. He gives Arsenal their flowers, gives Eze a personal nod, and then sneaks in the little dig that sends everyone into meltdown. It is sharp, it is funny, and it is exactly the kind of thing that makes press conference clips travel. Spurs fans are obviously going to hate it, but that is football, and if you are getting annoyed by a line like this then maybe the internet is not for you because it will only get worse from here and everyone knows it
 
Arsenal fans will obviously enjoy this, and fair enough, but I do think a lot of people are pretending the Spurs angle is way more serious than it is. It is just a bit of cheek from a manager who knows his words will travel, and that is why it landed imo
 
Spurs fans cant even get through a day without someone taking the piss now, Glasner just walked in and said hold my pint and the whole timeline exploded, brutal stuff honestly
 
On one level this is just a manager being witty and giving a nice compliment with a bit of edge, and that is fine, but the reaction tells you everything about how thin skinned the whole football internet has become because now every throwaway line has to become a war, and Spurs fans are understandably sick of being the punchline, but then again if you keep getting mentioned like this you have to laugh at some point because otherwise it just eats you alive, and that is where I am at with it, I think the quote is funny, I think the outrage is overblown, and I think everyone should calm down a bit before turning into complete maniacs over a sentence
 
This is exactly why I love when managers have a bit of personality because it breaks up all the same boring nonsense and suddenly everyone is talking about one line for hours and then Spurs fans are acting like they have been personally attacked and Arsenal fans are celebrating like they have won a cup and Palace fans are in the middle just trying to enjoy the fact one of theirs got mentioned in a big way and honestly the whole thing is just brilliant because football needs a bit of needle and a bit of mischief and if that means someone gets a tiny bit embarrassed then so be it
 
From a tactical point of view this sort of comment can also help keep the mood light around a squad, especially when the pressure is on and everyone is watching every word. It shifts the conversation away from pure results talk and gives the players a bit of a laugh, even if Spurs fans will hate hearing it
 
Glasner has probably done more to entertain the neutral than most managers do in a season. The quote is sharp, but it is also clearly meant as a compliment to Arsenal and Eze rather than a serious attack on anyone.
