Griezmann and MLS

The interesting bit is not the quote itself, it is that he framed the move around preparation. That suggests he sees the league as something he still needs to approach seriously, which is a decent sign for both him and the club.
 
People are missing that this is exactly how modern footballers talk when they want to make a move sound meaningful, they mix a bit of personal history with a bit of professionalism and suddenly it becomes this grand narrative about destiny, but really it is just a player explaining why the timing works for him and why the destination suits his life, and there is nothing wrong with that at all, what annoys me is the weird sneering from fans who think any mention of MLS has to be a joke or a retirement home dig because not every move has to be judged against peak European football standards forever, players are allowed to want different things and that does not make them frauds, it just makes them human, which apparently is a controversial take these days
 
I will defend this move because people are acting like MLS is some kind of punishment when for plenty of players it is a serious choice about life, rhythm, family, and what they want from the next stage of their career, and if Griezmann says he has wanted it since he was 18 then I do not see why everyone is so desperate to call him a liar, maybe he really did watch American sports and think that was the league he wanted to experience one day, maybe he wanted to test himself in a different environment, maybe he wanted to leave Europe on his own terms, whatever the reason it is still valid and the sneering is just tired at this point because it always comes from the same place where people think if it is not Champions League football then it must be meaningless, which is bollocks
 
What gets me is the way officials and media always let these quotes get spun into a neat little story while the actual context disappears, because suddenly the whole discussion becomes about whether he truly dreamed of MLS or not and nobody is asking why the conversation around these moves is always so loaded with judgment, same with every transfer and every interview, there is always some agenda being pushed and fans just lap it up like idiots, then when the player does something ordinary everyone acts stunned, it is all so performative and honestly the whole machine around football interviews is a joke
 
I was in the pub when this came up on the telly and the whole table just stopped because one lad is a big Atletico fan and another one swore blind he would never go to MLS unless he was done with football, and the debate got so stupid so quickly that we ended up arguing about American sports instead of the actual quote, which is probably exactly what Griezmann would have wanted if the story is true, because it gets everyone talking and half the room defending him and the other half taking the piss, proper football pub nonsense really, I still think it is more believable than people are making out though because players do have weird long term preferences and not everything is about money or status
 
I think the sensible reading is that he wanted a new environment and has enough self-awareness to prepare properly for it. That is not the same as saying he was desperate to play in MLS for footballing reasons, but it does make the move feel more intentional imo
