Haaland calls Messi a madman

Haaland calling Messi a madman on Snapchat is exactly the sort of thing that gets football fans talking. It is a pretty simple line, but it says a lot about the respect these top players have for each other.

You can slag off the hype all you want, but when one of the best strikers in the world is still in awe of Messi, that tells its own story. Real recognises real, and this one feels like game recognises game.

Also funny how people immediately turn it into GOAT chat, golden boot chat, or some future Messi v Haaland debate. Sometimes it is just a quality player giving another quality player his flowers, and that is probably the most normal thing in football for once.

From a tactical point of view, it makes sense why Haaland would admire Messi so much. Messi does not just beat you with talent, he bends the shape of a game and forces defenders into bad decisions. Haaland is obviously a different profile, but the respect between elite players is obvious here.

I was in the pub last night when this came up and the whole table basically stopped talking because even the lads who only watch finals know exactly what this means, one bloke started saying Messi is finished and another one nearly choked on his pint laughing because the timing was so ridiculous, then some older fella who barely says a word just nodded and said when you have watched football long enough you know the special ones when you see them and that was that, proper weird little moment where everyone agreed for once and it felt like football chat actually made sense

icl this is why i like haaland off the pitch man he could act like a massive diva with all the goals and the aura and the city stuff but instead he just sounds like a bloke who knows football and knows when someone is beyond the usual chat, proper humble from him and it makes the whole thing feel a bit bigger than just some social media clip

some people really acting shocked like the best striker in the world has eyes and can see messi is still doing mad things, as if this is some huge revelation and not the most obvious sentence ever said by a footballer, it is giving absolute first time watching ball energy and i am here for the tears

It is a nice bit of respect between two elite players, and that is probably all it needs to be. People will turn it into a rivalry story because that is what football discourse does, but sometimes admiration is just admiration.

The interesting part is how these comments keep coming back to Messi even when the original subject is Haaland. That alone shows how much gravity Messi still has in football conversation, and why players from the next generation still measure themselves against him.
