Henry on Ronaldo: team first

Thierry Henry has gone in on Ronaldo after Portugal's game against DR Congo, basically saying the team needs to score, not just him. It’s the kind of line that always gets people debating Ronaldo again because it hits straight at the ego vs team argument.

A lot of people are pointing to Messi yesterday and saying there was no way Ronaldo was going to be selfless after that. Others are already joking about Ronaldo at the World Cup in 2030. It feels like one of those clips that will do the rounds for ages because it says a lot in very few words.

What do people reckon, fair criticism from Henry or just another day of pundits taking a swipe at Ronaldo?

Henry is not wrong, though. At this stage the message has to be about the team and not one player trying to make every moment about himself. That does not mean Ronaldo cannot contribute, just that the balance has to change.

The main issue is not even whether Ronaldo can still finish chances it is the fact the whole attack can get bent around him if the team are not careful and that makes it easier to defend against them because everything becomes predictable and the rest of the front line end up feeding off scraps

Henry said what loads of people have been thinking for ages. When the game turns into everyone waiting for one man to decide everything, the team suffers, and Portugal are not some charity for nostalgia. Ronaldo has had a ridiculous career and nobody can take that away, but there comes a point where the shirt has to matter more than the spotlight. The wild bit is people still act shocked when pundits say the obvious, as if every criticism is some massive hate campaign. If the team needs the goal, the team needs the goal, simple as that, and if that hurts a few feelings then so be it because football is not a tribute act and we are all bored of the same old drama

Henry’s point is fairly straightforward: the best teams reduce the need for one player to carry every attack. If Portugal are too focused on Ronaldo getting his moment, it can make them easier to read and less efficient overall.

henry just said what everyone can see tbh if the team is always waiting for ronaldo to be the answer then the movement around him suffers and the whole thing gets stale real quick and people act like thats hate when its just football
