Hull back in the Premier League

someone start checking the pub quiz answers now because this hull story is going straight in the memory bank, one of those absolute championship daftness moments where nobody knows how it happened but everyone is pretending they called it all along lol

Hull deserved credit for getting over the line, even if plenty of people will focus on the stats or the chaos. Boro will be gutted, but promotion always comes down to handling the pressure better than the other lot.

On paper this is exactly the kind of result people use to argue against stats, because Hull were apparently nowhere near the top of the xG table and still ended up promoted, which is a reminder that football is played by actual human beings and not by spreadsheets. But at the same time that does not mean stats are pointless, it just means they do not tell the whole story and fans use them like a blunt weapon whenever it suits them, and now everyone will be posting jokes about xG being dead when really the bigger story is that Hull found the right moments and Middlesbrough didnt, and that is the brutal part of knockout football, one bad afternoon and your season is just gone, and i am still laughing because the whole thing is ridiculous and the championship is a complete bin fire in the best possible way

I was in the pub for a Hull game years ago and there was this bloke on the next table who kept saying the club would somehow drag you back into hope just to ruin your weekend and honestly that is exactly what this feels like again because one minute people are talking about the season like its over and then suddenly they are in the Premier League and the whole place is losing its mind and every Boro fan in the room is staring into the middle distance like they have just seen a ghost, and thats the championship for you, absolute nonsense from start to finish, one minute youre dead and the next minute youre singing about the prem and someone is shouting that the lawyers are in the mud and no one even knows what day it is anymore

Middlesbrough are going to hear about this for ages because they always do this sort of thing where they look like they should be in the mix and then somehow they end up being the punchline again and again and again, and people will try to act polite about it but lets be honest they bottled it when it mattered and thats why everyone is laughing, the whole club gets dragged through the mud every time theres a big moment and this is no different, no grit no killer instinct just more Championship heartbreak and now they get to sit there while Hull celebrate and every rival fan has a field day

I think the most impressive part is how Hull managed to flip the pressure onto Middlesbrough when everything looked so tight. They stayed in the fight and that matters in these games. But at the same time it is just so funny because everyone who was acting like they had it all figured out is now scrambling to explain it, and the xG crowd is going to be unbearable, and the lawyers jokes are going to be everywhere, and honestly fair enough because this is exactly the sort of chaos that makes the Championship feel like its operating on a completely different planet

nah i dont buy the whole they were lucky stuff, if you keep putting yourself in position to win these games then it aint luck anymore and boro had their chance to stop it and didnt

The officials will be getting brought up for weeks after this because whenever a game turns into a promotion meltdown everyone suddenly decides the ref has ruined football and half the fanbase is rewriting the whole match in real time, yellow cards become conspiracies, every foul becomes a scandal, and by tomorrow there will be ten different versions of what happened, but at the end of the day one side handled the pressure and the other side didnt, and that is why these games always end with everyone screaming about the referee instead of actually admitting their own team folded

The sensible take is that Hull have probably earned the right to enjoy this because whatever people think about style or numbers, they got the result that mattered and now they are up. But I also cannot help thinking about how quickly these stories get mythologised, because in a week everyone will be pretending they knew Hull were destined for it while also using it as proof that every stat model is nonsense, and then somehow this turns into a debate about managers, owners, rebuilds and whether the Premier League will just swallow them whole before the summer even ends, and now I am annoyed all over again because football discourse never stays on the actual football

People are already acting like Middlesbrough are some kind of joke and thats rubbish because they were in the fight and these games are brutal, one moment youre alive and the next youre done, thats the whole point of the championship and why it hurts so much when you lose, you dont get to keep your place because you were tidy for long spells or because a model liked your numbers, you need to actually finish the job and that can go wrong for anyone, so fair play Hull and all that but lets not pretend Boro are some tinpot mess that didnt belong there because they did and they will be hurting for a long time
