Infantino and FIFA term-limit nonsense

This feels like one of those FIFA stories where the headline is doing a lot of heavy lifting and the actual outcome is already obvious. If they really are being asked to stop him re-standing over a clear term-limit issue, you still have to assume nothing meaningful happens until someone with actual power forces it.

The whole thing just sums up how FIFA operates, really. Every time you think there might be a rule, a limit, or some basic bit of governance, it turns into another mess of wording, loopholes, and people pretending not to understand what the issue is.

Also, the Athletic clearly knows exactly what it is doing with these Infantino pieces. They can smell a disaster from a mile off and they are absolutely loving it.

One of those stories where the wording does half the work and still somehow manages to make FIFA look even more ridiculous than usual, because if they have to be asked to stop him then the whole system is already cooked, and you just know nothing proper will happen, he will find a loophole, someone will shrug, and the rest of us will be sat here watching the same old power grab with a different headline and honestly it is so tiresome mate

The term-limit issue is the real story here, not whether he personally wants another go. If the rules are unclear enough for this to keep happening, then FIFA has already failed at basic governance. That said, it feels like the kind of thing they will bury in procedure and carry on as usual.

The important bit is not even Infantino himself, it is the fact that the rules around this stuff seem either vague or conveniently vague depending on who is benefiting, and that is exactly why people have so little faith in FIFA as an institution. If there were proper limits, properly written and properly enforced, then this would not become a never-ending discussion every time someone powerful fancies another run at the top. Instead we get legal language, selective outrage, and the usual parade of officials acting as if nobody can read the room. And then you look at the wider football world and realise how many organisations copy the same habits, just with less money and worse suits

How is this even still a discussion honestly the whole thing stinks and the people in charge always act like rules are for everyone else except them and if anyone else tried this kind of nonsense they would be thrown out straight away but because it is FIFA they will just sit there with their hands folded and their fake serious faces pretending there is some complicated technical reason why the obvious answer cannot happen and it is always the same with these officials they hide behind procedure when everyone can see what is going on and it makes you want to throw the telly out the window

Infantino is just shameless at this point isnt he every time his name comes up it is another bit of nonsense another bit of self importance another bit of trying to cling on like the whole sport revolves around him and it doesnt and never has and the way he carries on you would think he was some football messiah when really he is just the same suit in a different room taking the piss and the fact people still have to debate whether he should be allowed to stand is embarrassing in itself because he should have been nowhere near this long ago
