Infantino taking a corner is peak football nonsense

Saw the clip of Gianni Infantino taking a corner at some promotional event and honestly, it says a lot without even needing context. The man is meant to be the face of world football and he looks completely lost trying to kick a ball

It’s meant to be a bit of fun, obviously, but it ends up looking more like a hostage video for the sport. Proper awkward, proper cringe, and somehow exactly what you’d expect from FIFA

The whole thing just feels like another reminder that football governance and actual football are living on different planets. If you needed a visual metaphor for the state of the game, this is probably it

At a basic level, the issue is not even the corner itself, it is the fact that the man fronting world football looks so detached from the sport he is supposed to represent. You can forgive a bad touch, plenty of people have them, but this had that weird staged feel where everybody involved thought it was a good bit of PR and instead it just confirmed every suspicion people already had. It is almost impressive how a harmless promo moment can turn into another image of FIFA being miles away from actual football and now I am sitting here annoyed all over again because it is always the same polished nonsense and never anything genuine

the funniest part is they clearly thought this would make him look relatable and instead he looks like a bloke who has never seen a ball before in his life and somehow that feels right for fifa because every time they try to do a human moment it comes off fake and awkward and you can just picture the whole pr team nodding like yes excellent idea gianni will be one of the lads and then he swings at the thing like he is clearing rubble from a driveway and the whole sport is left looking daft again because this is the same organisation that wraps itself in football language while being completely divorced from the actual game and i swear every time i see his face near a pitch i lose another bit of patience with the lot of them

The sensible point is that a bad corner in a staged event should not matter much on its own, because it is just a silly little clip. But football is built on symbolism and this man already has the least natural football aura imaginable, so every awkward movement becomes a meme and every meme becomes another reminder of how disconnected the governing body feels from real supporters. Then you start thinking about the whole thing again and it spirals into the usual rage about suits, optics, and people who have never had mud on their boots trying to sell the game back to us and honestly it is exhausting because even the harmless stuff ends up feeling insulting

There is a wider issue here beyond the comedy of the moment. When a football administrator looks visibly uncomfortable doing the most basic football action, it reinforces the sense that the game is being run by people who are far removed from it. That disconnect matters because football culture is built on authenticity.

its just mad how he gets wheeled out for this stuff like it makes him look connected to the game when it does the opposite and every touch just screams im here for the photo op and nothing else and fifa wonder why people cant stand them

You can almost map the whole organisation onto that corner, overhyped, poorly executed, and somehow still filmed for everyone to laugh at after. It is not the mistake itself, it is the confidence around it that makes it worse

People are acting like the joke is just that he miskicked a ball but the real issue is how easy it is to turn this into a perfect little snapshot of the people running football like they are above it all and then they get caught looking clueless doing the most basic thing imaginable and everyone piles in and fair enough because if you spend your life giving speeches about the beautiful game then maybe learn how to make contact with a ball before you go out there for the cameras and start pretending you are one of us because it is embarrassing for them and embarrassing for the sport and I am absolutely sick of these suits turning everything into branding while the actual game gets treated like background noise

Why is it always this one bloke who ends up becoming the face of football being run into the ground though because every time he appears there is some new clip that makes him look even more disconnected from the actual sport and this corner is just the latest one and I know it is supposed to be a joke but it genuinely winds me up because it feels like he has been gifted the biggest job in football without ever having to understand what football means to normal fans and now he is out there toe poking balls into orbit like a man who has never once cared about the game and honestly I could rant about him all night because he just represents everything rotten about the whole setup

At first glance it is just a bad corner and nothing more, but the reason it lands so hard is because he already has that polished, detached look that makes every football moment feel slightly off. The clip becomes symbolic very quickly. Then you remember who he is and the whole thing just gets worse and worse because it feels like the sport is being handled by people who do not even slightly get it and that is what annoys me most

The way he swings at it like he owes the ball money is honestly brilliant, proper elite clown behaviour from the top man of world football

The officials probably loved the whole staged nonsense but this is exactly why people roll their eyes at these events because everything is choreographed, everything is fake, and then the one thing they cannot script is a decent touch from the man himself. He somehow makes a simple corner look like a foul throw from a five a side pub team and the cringe just gets worse when you realise there are cameras on it and people are meant to clap along like it is inspiring. Just another example of football being treated like a brand exercise instead of a sport
